Buenos Aires, Argentina. With month and a half left of this year, FEVA still has activities on its agenda.  Some of them will take place over the coming weeks, and others like the Tamborrada Workshop and the Summer 2021 Barnetegi for the Euskara Munduan Program (not sure if in person or online), will take place in January. For what is left of November and December, the Federation will teach a second Dance Workshop with the Elai Alai Dance group in Portugalete, with Gorka Mostajo at the head.

The date for this is Saturday, November 28th.  There will also be a Pandero and Txistu workshop and a Digital Marketing one, along with a Basque cooking class taught by Itziar Aguirre (the last three with dates TBD).  All online.

“More Active than Ever”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the community has fought to adapt to provide the best response possible to the current situation of closers, restrictions and quarantines provoked by the pandemic.  There is no doubt that quarantine, with different characteristics in each country, has supposed  a hard hit for euskal etxeas that were forced to cancel, and in many cases adapt and reprogram their activities, with an unprecedented an obligatory role of the digital dimension.

In this context, the Federation of Basque-Argentine Entities dived into the internet and had one of its most active years ever virtually, with multiple proposals, diversity of topics and above all, with an excellent response that marks a turning point and a new stage for the institution, according to the Federation.

Elected at last General Assembly on August 1st, FEVA President Arantxa Anitua, who served as vice-president until  President Javier Ederra’s return in May 2019 to the Basque Country, and then until last August as President, is optimistic and told EuskalKultura.eus “Even though we are aware that is has been a very tough year, especially if we think about Basque clubs, the truth is that the opening of virtual spaces, forced by the pandemic, have been very beneficial for FEVA.”

“We were able to capitalize and give “turn the screw” on activities, projects, courses, talks and conferences, and make them available to euskal etxeas. But that’s not all, we were also able to reach members directly at Basque clubs and even cross the border to also be in Chile and Uruguay,” she explains.

In her evaluation, the president stresses that thanks to the virtual format, FEVA was able to give visibility to “human resources that are found at all Basque clubs and fulfill its role better than ever.”

“We have received many messages of thanks, above all from Chile, and praise for the work we are doing.  Forced by the situation, we achieved a change that FEVA was missing, as an institution that can generate a lot of content and that can make it available to everyone.  The virtual format, without a doubt, is here to stay,” Anitua said.

A summary of FEVA activities in 2020 is available on its Facebook page FEVA Federación de Entidades Vasco Argentinas.
