Necochea, Argentina. On April 3rd the Euzko Etxea’s trinkete was the site of a Mixed Tournament of Pelota Paleta.  The event included the participation of high-level players and the results follow: first place went to the team made up of Victoria Lastagaray and Sebastian Gomez, and second place went to Cristian “Oso,” Barac and Maite Bilbao.  The event was organized by the Basque Club’s subcommittee on Paleta that currently includes the presence of three women for the first time, Maite Bilbao, Virginia Lastagaray and Emilia Menna.

The club as well as Pelota Paleta is taking great strides in favor of the integration of women.  In the words of its president, Kiti Zubillaga, “We proudly watch the progress at our club.  The Subcommittee on Pilota is mixed and that doesn’t happen everywhere, “she said.

The Women’s School of Paleta at the club was created in 2016, thanks to an initiative by Raul Ynes and Joseba Bilbao who taught the classes.  Supported by the subcommittee of Paleta, and thanks to word of mouth, in 2018, the proposal was strengthened and included some 20 participants in the classes taught by Brian Correa.  Today that number has doubled, and in an historic moment for women’s paleta, the number of players is now 40.

The inclusion of women in the subcommittee also provided a new impetus to the activity with local, mixed and international women’s tournaments.  In the future, and as long as the health situation allows, they are planning the organization in Necochea of the Interzonal Women’s Tournament, an international women’s tournament and the Argentine first in men’s case.

Schedule of the Pelota Paleta School

To guarantee the future of the activity the Basque club also has a school for txikis of both sexes that train according to their age on Saturday from 10am-2pm.  Adult women’s classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3pm-5pm.
