Two Basque films, Emak bakia baita and Miel de Naranjas, were honored at the Film Festival in Nantes, France

For another year, Basque film was featured at the Nantes Film Festival; this time with two films winning prizes. The first was full-length film ´Emak bakia baita´ by Oskar Alegria, which was awarded the Best Documentary. This film will debut tomorrow in Madrid. On the other hand, the film ´Miel de Naranjas´, by Imanol Uribe, won the People’s Choice Award. Participation of Basque film in the festival was supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute.

Nantes, France. The Nantes Film Festival showed 16 Basque productions this year.  Four of them were in the official selection in the competition: Miel de Naranjas (Imanol Uribe, 2012), Emak bakia baita (Oskar Alegria, 2012), Deus et machina(Koldo Almandoz, 2012) and Hamaiketakoa (Telmo Esnal, 2012). The first two were awarded the People’s Choice Award and the Best Documentary respectively.

The rest of the films were shown in the Fenêtre Basque, (Basque window) section organized by the festival thanks to an agreement of collaboration with the Etxepare Basque Institute.  In this section the following feature films were shown: Blancanieves (Pablo Berger, 2011), Bypass (Patxo Telleria, Aitor Mazo, 2011), La conspiración (Pedro Olea, 2011), Gernika bajo las bombas (Luis Marías, 2012), Mur-Mur (Juanmi Gutierrez, 2012), To say goodbye (Matt Richards, 2012) and Zuloak (Fermin Muguruza, 2012).

There was also a selection of shorts that were part of the Kimuak program including: Beerburg (Ander Mendia, 2012), ¡Agua! (Mikel Rueda, 2012), Casa vacía (Jesus Mª Palacios, 2012), Los monstruos no existen (Paul Urkijo, 2012) and Bajo la almohada (Isabel Herguera, 2012).

Emak Bakia baita in Madrid

The documentary, Emak Bakia baita, is enjoying international acclaim with an extensive tour of festivals and international programs.  Last Saturday, it was shown very successfully at the Cineclub Detour in Rome, in a stop organized by the Euskara Basque Cultural Association and the Department of Euskera and Basque Culture at UPTER.

The next stop will be in Madrid at the Cineteca de Matadero Madrid, where it will premiere tomorrow and will be shown at several more places until the 26th of the month.
