Santiago, Chile. Chile is going through a difficult time because of the way that COVID-19 has spread throughout its territory, but different cultural groups and associations try to continue building and make these hours a little more bearable for the community. This is the case of the Basque Community of Chile Basque club in Santiago that has decided to go ahead with the commemoration of its 13th anniversary and carry out its Basque Week 2020, this time virtually.

The celebration will be “austere with the participation of members and friends from their homes, due to the shelter in place order,” club sources told EuskalKultura.eus, led by Rossana Arza.  The program will take place on social media and will run June 24-26, with the following proposals:

Wednesday, June 24th

-Greetings from authorities and Basque cultural references:

  • The Basque Government’s Secretary General of Foreign Action, Marian Elorza
  • Director of the Basque Community Abroad, Gorka Alvarez Aranburu
  • Mayor of Getaria, birthplace of Juan Sebastian Elcano, Haritz Alberdi
  • Coordinator of Euskara Munduan at the Etxepare Basque Institute, Jose Francisco Zinkunegi
  • FEVA President, Federation of Basque-Argentine Entities, Arantxa Anitua
  • President of the Estadio Español of Las Condes, headquarters of the Basque Community of Chile, Juan Erenchun
  • President of the Bizkaian Artistic Association, José Ramón López Martínez

-Basque Dance, directed by Maitane Uribe
-Basque Choir Performance, directed by Ignacio Bastarrica

Thursday, June 25

-Poetry reading by the Euskara Workshop with irakasle Christian Etxeberria
-Music performance by students from the Txistu/Tamboril Workshop, taught by Raimundo Riquelme
-Singing:

  • “El barberillo de Lavapies,” by Daniela Ezquerra
  • Maite,” by Tenor Ignacio Torrontegui

Friday, June 26

-Talk and Exhibit “500 Years since the Trip Around the World by Sebastián Elcano”
-Documentaries about Juan Sebastian Elcano
