On April 2, 2013 the city of La Plata suffered a violent storm and as a result, the most serious flooding in its history. The results were also tragic with more than 60 dead and countless property losses. “As soon as we heard the news, Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu contacted us to express his condolences and to offer the solidarity of the Basque people,” club sources told EuskalKultura.com. “Now, we have finished the administrative processes so that five members will receive a subsidy to help with work on the infrastructure of their homes.”

La Plata, Argentina.   The news about the floods in La Plata got to Euskadi quickly and with the same urgency, Lehendakari Urkullu contacted the local Basque club to express his regret for what had happened.  Moreover, a few days after the tragic event, the Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina, Sara Pagola, and the Director of Basque Communities Abroad, Asier Vallejo, accompanied by then FEVA president, Ricardo Basterra, visited the city meet with Mayor Pablo Bruera and members of the Basque club who were affected by the flooding.  As part of these meetings, Basque Government representatives pledged to provide aid to the latter, referred by the Euzko Etxea in La Plata.

The corresponding administrative process is now finished and aforementioned aid for five members was awarded on May 23rd.  The aid will be used to carry out work on the infrastructure of the victims’ homes. In the same way, the Basque club also reported that recipients of aid Daniel Loyola, Maria Cecilia Zubia, Maria Laura Apecechea, Omar Errea and Susana Aramburu have sent a not of thanks to Asier Vallejo in which they say, “this aid is a great help in continuing the reconstruction of our houses, which had been very affected and in this way we are able to recuperate, along with getting our lives back to normal. It is also appropriate to let you know that none of the undersigned have received any other help whether it be federal, national, provincial or local, and so the Basque Government was the only government institution that has offered and given us grants.” Meanwhile the Basque club board of directors also sent a public thank you to Asier Vallejo, to Sara Pagola as well as to Lehendakari Urkullu.
