Madrid will dedicate this coming week to a special series called “Atxaga Universe,” on the 25 anniversary of Obabakoak

This year marks 25 years since the novel Obabakoak was published, one of the landmarks of contemporary Basque literature, and so the Etxepare Basque Institute along with several other cultural centers in Madrid have planned a special series dedicated to the figure and work of Bernardo Atxaga. It will take place on March 20-April 7, and will include film and conferences as well as the debut of the play The Accordionist’s Son, based on the novel of the same name.

Donostia-San Sebastian.  The series, that will take place in various cultural centers in Madrid, will begin on Wednesday of next week, March 20 with the premiere of the audiovisual “The Universe of Atxaga.”  This work, directed by Carlos Rodríguez written by Mari Jose Olaziregi and Estibalitz Ezkerra, is a tour of the works of this Basque writer (Asteasu, 1951).  The author himself will also be in attendance, presented by writer, actor and director Patxo Telleria.  This will take place at the Casa de Lector (Matadero Madrid), at 19:30.

Following at 21:00 the exhibit “Atxaga in the Arts” will open in the Cinemateca de Matadero.  This is an exhibit created by the Etxepare Institute and put together by writer Itziar Zubizarreta.  Here, visitors will be able to get to know the relationship between creators and Atxaga’s work, as well as his influence and adaptations made in other disciplines.  The exhibit will be open through April 7.

The Accordionist’s Son on stage

One of the main events of the series will take place on March 22 with the premiere of the theatrical adaptation of The Accordionist’s Son at the Teatro Valle-Inclán of the National Center for Drama in Madrid.  The work can be seen until April 7 and was written by Patxo Telleria, and directed by Fernando Bernues.  The show was produced by Antzerkiz (Teatro Arriaga, Principal Antzokia in Gasteiz and the Victoria Eugenia in Donostia) and the Tanttaka Teatroa Company.

The work is based on the novel The Accordionist’s Son that tells the story of the friendship between Joseba and David from infancy, through war, and violence during their adult years.  The book was published in 2004, and has been awarded numerous international prizes (Grinzane Cavour, Mondello, Times Literary Supplement Translation Prize...).

In addition, and for the first time in the history of the National Center for Drama, on March 30 and 31, the play will be performed in Basque, with Spanish subtitles, thanks to the Etxepare Institute.

Film at the Matadero

On March 23 and 24 the Cineteca de Matadero will offer a special event entitled, “Atxaga at the Movies.”  Four films will be shown: The documentary Leku hutsak, hitz beteak, de  Joxeanjel Arbelaitz; Obaba, by Montxo Armendariz; Zeru Horiek, by Aizpea Goenaga ; and Bi anai, by  Imanol Rayo.

Finally on March 25, Bernardo Atxaga himself will talk about his poetry in a talk entitled, “Reactions to the Striped Stone (Arraiatutako harri baten aurrean erreakzioak).  This will take place at the Teatro Valle-Inclan in the National Center for Drama.  The lecture will be followed by a concert by singer Ruper Ordorika nad musician Arkaitz Miner will play various songs with lyrics based on poems by Atxaga.  Ordorika was the first to ever put Atxaga’s words to music adapting poems from his book Etiopia on his album (1980).
