It is not at all clear how far it will go, and what practical consequences the Resolution of the French Constitutional Council will have, which seems to outlaw ikastolas (Basque schools) and its language immersion model, and also affects other local languages of France equally. In the (French) Basque Country, the elected officials, the Ikastolas and the entire Basque educational world feels particularly attacked and hurt. Last Saturday’s demonstration in Baiona brought together ten thousand people in protest against the Resolution
This is the manifesto that was rea don Saturday, May 29th at the end of the demonstration, interspersing paragraphs in Basque and French (in these lines we have also translated the texts from French to Spanish, and from Spanish to English):
Nous sommes plus de 10.000 dans les rues de Bayonne aujourd’hui, pour dire que n’accepterons pas de voir détruire un système éducatif qui a 50 ans, et une méthode pédagogique dont les excellents résultats sont démontrés.
Somos más de 10.000 hoy en las calles de Baiona, para decir que no aceptaremos ver la destrucción de un sistema educativo que tiene 50 años, y un método educativo cuyos excelentes resultados han quedado demostrados.
We are more than 10,000 today in the streets of Baiona to say that we will not accept seeing the destruction of an educational system that is 50 years old, and an educational method whose excellent results have been demonstrated.
