Córdoba, Argentina. Obligatory quarantine has been in place in Argentina since March 20th.  Just over 2 weeks after confinement began, the society has verified satisfactorily how cultural references and institutions use the internet to stay connected, informed, and entertained.  Basque clubs have not been left out to f this initiative with many proposing, or sharing new activities on social media.

At the Basque Association Gerora in Cordoba, the Basque group led by instructor, Elba Mocoroa, and the “Lurra eta Haizea,” group have been working on a triptych in video format with text in Basque and Spanish and music provided by its music workshop participants.

In this first installment the present the poem “Aurrenekoan poesía hitz batez” (At First Poetry Begins With Just One Word) by Tere Irastortza, Basque writer from Zaldibia (Gipuzkoa).  The other two installments of the triptych will be published in the coming week and the next one on their Facebook page. Zorionak on the initiative!

[Euskal poemak (Basque poems): "Aurrenekoan poesia hitz batez" by Tere Irastortza]

Aurrenekoan poesía hitz batez
hasten da
bere gisara
—poetak Jainko izan nahi baitu—.

Geroko poesía esaldi batez
hasten da
—poetak profeta izan nahi baitu—.

Geroagoko poesía ideia batez
baliatzen da
—poetak anphoran gorde nahi du—.

Azkenean poesiak hutsunea
zabaltzen du
—sortzeko espazio behar da—.

At the beginning the poetry begins
with a word
alone
—Because the poet wants to be God.

Later the poetry begins
with a phrase
—Because the poet wants to be a prophet.

Then poetry is served
of an idea
—Which the poet wants to keep in an amphora.

At the end the poetry opens
A hole
—You need a space to create.

Tere Irastortza
