Carnival starts with the traditional celebration of Fat Thursday in a large part of the Basque Country taking costumes, parties, and tradition to the streets. In the Basque province of Lapurdi, for example the Hartzaro Festival will resume the custom celebrating the day with the presentation of a show entitled, “Tutak.” In the Diaspora, Basque clubs like that in New York and Barcelona, among many others all over the world, are also organizing costume parties.

Uztaritze, Lapurdi.  Carnival begins tomorrow with Fat Thursday (Ostegun Gizena in Basque), even though in Uztaritze they have been celebrating since February 1, thanks to the Hartzaro Festival. The 17th edition of this festival, that will last until February 12, was organized by the Herri Soinu Association and presents a full program of activities with entertainment, concerts and shows.

Tomorrow, Tutak will make its premier in Latsa, created by the young artist Jokin Irungaray (1987, Itsasu, Lapurdi).  Musician, playwright and storyteller, Irungaray is also the show’s stage director (interview with Irungaray here, English version)

New York and Barcelona

The Diaspora will also join in on Carnival in New York, for example, the Euzko Etxea has organized an Aratuste (or Inauteria, both of them Carnival in Basque) festival on this Saturday.  Festivities will begin at 17:00 and will include a costume workshop and children’s games, as well as contests for the most original, scariest and most beautiful costume.

In Barcelona, the Euskal Etxea will combine Carnival with the Basque Film Festival that is currently taking place, with a cinema-themed costume party.  Carnival festivities will also take place in any number of Basque clubs from the US to Argentina and Uruguay, including Basque clubs and communities in Venezuela, Canada, China...
