Last weekend, the Etxepare Basque Institute participated in The Language Show in London with a stand and various special activities featuring the Basque language. The talks on bertsolaritza by Xabi Paya, a bertsolari and lecturer at the Institute, sparked great interest, in which he not only talked about the art of improvisation in Basque, but he also demonstrated it, singing verses in Basque, Spanish and English.

London, UK.  The Language Show in London is one of the most important gatherings, at the European level, in the field of language teaching, and as in previous editions, the Etxepare Basque Institute participated with various special activities on the Basque language, in order to introduce the Basque language and methods of learning it.

During the weekend the Institute’s stand attracted numerous visotrs interested in knowing more about Basque.  The stand provided general information about Basque and methods to learn it, dictionaries and text books.

Additionally, the Institute organized some special events like talks on bertsolaritza on October 19 by bertsolari and Basque lecturer, Xabi Pay.  There were two very special sessions where Paya not only talked about the art of bertsolaritza, but also demonstrated it live, improvising verses in Basque, Spanish and English.

Visitors at the fair were also given the opportunity to learn a little bit of Basque, thanks to an open class taught by Juan Arana, Basque lecturer at the University of Liverpool.  Finally, the talk by Ivan Igartua on the current sociolinguistic situation of the language gathered a large audience that was very interested in the topic.
