Atxaga's "Obabakoak" will star in the 6th Reading of Basque Classics at the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao

The novel, “Obabakoak,” one of the masterpieces of Basque literature, celebrates its 25th year with the VI Reading Classics in Euskara, organized by euskaltegi Zaharra Bilbao. Next Thursday, the continuous reading will begin at 8:00am at the Teatro Arriaga, starting with the author himself, Atxaga. The reading will be on stage in person, and through videos from Basque Centers around the world. Starting today, additional activities will take place in the square.

Bilbao, Bizkaia. Euskaltegi Bilbao Zaharra organizes the sixth year of Classics Reading in Euskara. This year the chosen book is, “Obabakoak” by Bernardo Atxaga. Atxaga’s novel celebrates its 25th year of being one of the most outstanding works in Basque literature. The event is supported by the Basque Department of the City of Bilbao and Caja Laboral.

The reading will begin on Thursday at Bilbao’s Arriaga Theatre, from 8:00am to 8:00pm. The author, Bernardo Atxaga, will begin the reading, followed by 400 people; from students of the euskaltegi to writers, politicians, actors and other personalities from the Basque society.   Joining them will be the Basque Centers from the Diaspora, who will also be at the stage of the Arriaga through pre-recorded videos.

Activities begin today

The reading will take place on Thursday, however, activities to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Obabakoak” will start today in a tent in Arriaga. There will be numerous events held throughout the week, including an exhibition and three Forum sessions organized around the novel. Bernardo Atxaga will participate in the first session, Ibon Sarasola and Inazio Mujika in the second, and Iñaki Goikoetxea Joxan Irazu and the third.
