Getaria, Gipuzkoa. Five hundred years ago, the Magellan-Elkano Expedition united the five continents for the first time by crossing oceans.  Today, 500 years later, both coasts reconnect through the “Postalak mundubiran” (Postcards around the world) that proposed a new trip around the world, this time by exchanging postcards and by gazing at our youth. Because of the initiative, 250 postcards traveled from Chile to the Basque Country and the same number came back in the opposite direction.

The work began in May; as part of the “Me and the Sea, You and the Sea” when schoolchildren in Chile and the Basque Country began to draw and write postcards.  The organization stresses its intention to encourage the reflection of the youngest around the sea and promote the discover of other cultures and worldviews.  The idea is, at the end of the project, to compile 500 postcards in a digital book freely available to both the participants and the general public.  The project aims to grow and involve other territories, in 2022, linked to the first trip around the world including Andalusia, the Philippines, Cape Verde or Portugal.

The initiative is due to the Elkano Foundation and the National Service of Cultural Heritage of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region, the Parliament of Gipuzkoa and Teraike Foundation (Chile), and the work of 7 schools on each shore.  In the Basque Country Iturzaeta Eskola Publikoa in Getaria, Zaragueta Eskola Publikoa in Orio, Goizeko Izarra and San Miguel in Mutriku, and Sagrado Corazón, Eleizalde Ikastola and San Frantzisko in Bermeo. From the Magallanes and Chilean Antartcic region: in Punta Arenas, the Hernando de Magallanes School, the Padre Alberto Hurtado School and the Pedro Sarmiento school; in Puerto Natales, the Coronel Santiago Bueras School; the Donald McIntyre Griffiths High School in Puerto Williams; as well as the Bernardo O´Higgins and the Colegio María Auxiliadora schools in Porvenir.
