The University of Nevada, Reno's Basque Studies Library hosted Iñaki Goiogana, a special visitor from the Basque Country last month. Goiogana, the head of archives of the Sabino Arana Fundazioa, generously donated six weeks of his personal vacation time to help the Basque Studies Library analyze and describe the treasures hidden deep within its archive collections.
Goiogana knew about this special University library because of the work done by Jon Bilbao and Bill Douglass, who are very well known in the Basque studies academic world. In the 1960s, Bilbao and Douglass created the University's Basque Studies Library and developed this important collection used by researchers and academics worldwide.
Goiogana had the expertise and cultural knowledge to do this work, which he feels is important for Basque studies research. His assistance helps the Basque Studies Library in its goal of further developing its archive collection and preserving and promoting the documentary heritage of the Basque diaspora, which is also a fascinating part of American history.
"We are grateful to Iñaki for his professional assistance," said Nere Erkiaga, interim director of the Basque Library.
