For the fifth year in a row, the Associazione Culturale Euskara Basque club and the Department of Basque Language at the UPTER University in Rome have united music, Basque and the inexhaustible capacity to create a group of fifth course (9-10 years of age) and have given form to the songs in Euskanta 2014. For another year, these children have created, recorded and illustrates some Basque songs, that can now be heard online on the Euskanta project’s blog. The result is curious, fun and surprising.

Rome, Italy. The Euskanta project continues firmly, creating a network of complicity and support among teachers and parents in various schools in Rome, and Basque entities in the city, Associazione Cultural Euskara (ACE) and the Department of Basque Language at the UPTER University.  The project that is supported by HABE’s Euskara Munduan program, has now reached its fifth year.

This year students at the Antonio Rosmini School were in charge of creating and putting to music, the voices and images of the Euskanta 2014 songs.  Supporters of the project as well as parents and students were very happy with the result of the experience.

The project began with students writing lyrics to songs in Italian, that they later would translate into Basque with the help of members of the ACE and UPTER.  That is how a small Basque-Italian glossary was created for each song.  Afterwards, with the support of musicians Alex Mendizabal and Marcello Liberato, a musical base was created of songs, they sang, and created the song in the studio.  They also drew illustrations that present the ideas and feelings behind each song.  With these images and texts, the designer, Viviana Tomassetti, created a small book to accompany the Eromako Zubia CD, which includes this edition’s songs.

All of the Euskanta 2014 songs, as well those of prior editions, can be heard on the project’s blog: www.euskanta.wordpress.com.
