There is a public school in Rome where the students – children of families with no previous relationship with the Basques or the Basque Country –work each year with the Basque language in music, expression and creativity. The project is called Euskanta and is developed with the support of the Associazione Euskara di Roma, Rome’s Basque club. It consists of boys and girls writing poems and short texts that are translated into Basque like a game. They are then set to music and recorded as the first published material of these students, including illustrations. The results of Euskanta 2012, in CD format, will be presented tomorrow at the school Manetti in Rome.

Rome, Italy.  Each year the students write a poem that is translated into Basque, and with their teacher's help is set to music.  The students express themselves and come into contact with Euskera during this process by reading and singing “their topics” accompanied by synthesizers and music resources to elaborate and record their final product.  At the end of the school year they receive a CD copy of the recording, including their own drawings and illustrations, that they or their friends and families can see, hear, or even download from the internet.  This initiative that is so simple yet so complicated is supported by the Associazione Culturale Euskara and the Dipartamento Lingua e Cultura Basca of the UPTER University, in conjunction with Rome’s Alfieri-Manetti school.

The end result of Euskanta 2012 will be presented tomorrow at the school but those who cannot attend are invited to listen to it on the website: http://euskanta.wordpress.com entangled in its various sections.  There you will find, with explanations in Basque and Italian, the results of the three editions that have taken place to date complete with tests, songs and pictures all created by the students at the Alfieri-Manetti school.  These have been the three editions:

-In 2011, the students of the Escuela Elemental V. Alfieri, fifth grade from groups A and B (coordinated by Alex Mendizabal with music mixed by Marcello Liberato)
-In 2010 students from the Escuela Elemental Manetti fifth grade, from groups A and B (coordinated by Alex Mendizabal with music mixed by Marcello Liberato)
