Montevideo, Uruguay. Even if the initiative began as a project among friends, the truth is that after its inauguration, the mural of the best-known work of Pablo Picasso received much coverage, not just by the media, but also by the city too that included it in one of its tours of the Uruguayan capital. The mural measures the same as the original “Guernica,” (349,3 x 776,6 cm), and is located on Dunant Street between Walter Medina and the 1st of Marzo, in the Piedras Blancas neighborhood northeast of the city.

The idea of installing the message of “denunciation against barbarism,” that Picasso’s painting represents in the streets of Montevideo came from Daniel Bonifacio, owner of the space where the mural was painted.  Instead, it was carried out by Nestor Arbondo, Daniel’s friend and neighbor.

“Nestor was an electrician his whole life and his experience with painting was linked to his political militancy and graffities,” Nancy Martinez told EuskalKultura.eus, Bonifacio’s wife; “but there was no doubt in adding him to this adventure.”

“In fact, what we want to express is that the message of “Guernica,” continues to be very current due to the violence and abuses which we are victims of here in Uruguay and in other South American countries,” she said.

“Guernica,” by Nestor Arbondo is semi-public.  It can be seen from the street but it is inside a house.  Anyone interested in visiting it can call 096 183 160 to coordinate the day and time.  Photos of the inauguration with the participation of neighbors are available here.
