Zarautz, Gipuzkoa. The TikTara group began in Zarautz, Gipuzkoa in 2010, and is comprised of musicians in various parts of Euskal Herria.  The group performs music with Latin roots in Euskera.  For years, they have performed in halls all over the Basque Country and in the last few months they have begun a new and interesting project, directly related to the Diaspora, which requires the collaboration of all Basques and Basque communities around the world.

Entitled Ubera, TikTara wants to tell and sing the stories of Basque immigrants that went to South America.  “The stories can be from any era or country; they can be individual or collective; we are interested in all of them and they will be a huge contribution to our work,” they explain.

The Ubera Project

The group explained to EuskalKultura.eus that even if Ubera began as a collection of songs, when they began to research the history of immigration they figured that they could do much more.  “Although it is difficult at this time to put together a musical or a complete show, our idea is by using the stories as a base, to write music and lyrics. In the future, we would like to be able to represent the work as a play, musical or audiovisual production.”

The choice of the project’s name was also the result of a complex process.  “Thanks to the writers who collaborated with us on the stories and the lyrics, we chose Ubera which in Basque is the name given to the wake or trace in the water left by ships, in the same way that become the objective of our work, to follow the trail of the thousands of people who crossed the Atlantic.”

Invitation

Everyone in the Basque Diaspora in South America knows stories of immigrants; have read family letters, or that have been transmitted in homes or heard in Basque clubs….All can become a source of inspiration for the Basque group…

“In some countries, like Brazil or Peru they are having a harder time collecting datat; but we are clear that this invitation is extended to all of South America.  Anyone who would like to tell us their story can do so in writing, or audio sent to tiktara@gmail.com”.
