Buenos Aires, Argentina. Last Friday and Saturday the Laurak Bat Basque Club became a gathering and distribution point for donations for Venezuelans living in the Comuna 1 in the capital city. The event was part of the “Well Protected 2020” (Bien Abrigados) campaign supported by Asoven (Association of Venezuelans in Argentina), that counts on donations from the UNHCR(United Nations Refugee Agency) and is part of the club’s solidarity activities as part of the city’s network.
Besides receiving donations, a group of members from Laurak Bat, including club president, Arantxa Anitua, created packages for families and were part of the distribution team. In the works of Anitua, “It was a club decision and I think that it is important to support these decisions. At a time like this, we don’t want to expose our older members, and so that is why I participated, as club president, but also filling bags.”
“The work that we did along with Eduardo Olivetto and Belen de Aguirre, understanding it was a very valuable activity, as well as part of training the new leaders. When running the club, we not only have to spread Basque culture but also have to participate in this type of activities that are also part of the institution’s journey.”
Anitua added, “One of the distribution points for donations was in the Parish of San Ignacio where Father Baigorria was delighted that Laurak Bat collaborated like them. The Basques are always in the middle of everything,” she joked.
Looking ahead, the president anticipated that it is very probable that the club returns to serve as the donation point as well as distributors for donations for other communities.
