The first recording of Gernikako Arbola, that is turning 100 years old, played again in Berlin

Thanks to Berlin’s Euskal Etxea, the translator and researcher Inaxio Lopez de Arana gave several talks throughout the week in Germany, on recordings done in 1913 in Euskal Herria by Austrian ethnologist, Rudolf Trebitsch. Among these was the first recording of the song Gernikako Arbola that could be heard this week in Germany, thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Gernika Euskal Etxea in Berlin. The first talk took place in the German capital, followed by another at the University of Leipzig, organized by the Basque language and culture lecturer there.

Berlin, Germany.  As part of the centennial of Basque musical recordings from 1913 by ethnologist Rudolf Trebitsch, the Euskal Etxea in Berlin organized a conference on the theme on May 27.  Also in attendance was translator-researcher Inaxio Lopez de Arana who has done an exhaustive study on the topic.  The event was attended by members of Berlin’s Euskal Etxea as well as other interested persons.

The next day, May 28, Lopez de Arana gave another talk at the University of Leipzig, invited byt the Basque lecturer there, supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute.  In this case, the talk was simultaneously translated into Spanish, English, French and German.  In addition to students studying Basque Studies, there were others with majors in history and anthropology.

Musical recordings done by Trebitsch can be found in Germany and the Euskal Etxea in Berlin along with the Etxepare Basque Institute wanted to commemorate the centennial by organizing the aforementioned conference inviting Inaxio Lopez de Arana, author of research in this field.
