Donostia-San Sebastián. Today, Wednesday, September 8th the Day of the Basque Diaspora will be celebrated in its fourth edition all over the world.  In regards to the institutional aspect, Lehendakari Urkullu will inaugurate an official event at 11am at the Sancho El Sabio Foundation in Vitoria-Gasteiz with the “Basques in California” exhibit that includes pieced from the Basque Museum in Boise.  The event, livestreamed, will begin at 11:00am at the Euskadi School of Art and Design (details here).  Through the Diaspora there are several clubs and institutions that have accepted the “Eusko Challenge,” and have uploaded contents on social media using the hashtag #EuskoChallenge to show the world “how they experience September 8th, the Day of the Basque Diaspora.”

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, in places where the pandemic has allowed folks to catch their breath, in person events are taking place with Basque club organizing various activities, being in many cases the first presential event in months.  Unfortunately, in other cities the only option is a virtual one, and so maintaining the spirit of the day, they have made dozens of calls on social media.

Here are some of the events planned for today, and in the coming days.  We are sure that many more are planned, so if you Basque club doesn’t appear here, please let us know by emailing info@euskalkultura.eus.

Some of the Festivities that will take place today, September 8, 2021:

Germany

-The Euskal Etxea de Berlín will hold a reading in Basque and German of passages from the book Neguko argiak by Irati Elorrieta. The event begins at 6pm at the Mediengalerie, Dudenstr. 10, Berlin-Kreuzberg (U6- Platz der Luftbrücke).

Argentina

-The Eusketxe in Buenos Aires invites everyone to a virtual space of reflection on the Day of the Diaspora.  This will begin at 7pm on Zoom. ID: 641 434 7246. Access code: 607337. Information, here.
-The Ongi Etorri Basque Club in Magdalena will commemorate the Day of the Diaspora with a photo and book exhibit.  They will also provide “tejas” and coffee to those who attend and a dance performance will also take place.  The event begins at 11am in front of the main plaza.

Spain

-The Euskal Etxea in Madrid will open its doors at 7:30pm to celebrate with dance, music literature, traditional song and some other surprises.  More information, here.

United States

-The Basque Studies Program at Boise State University (BSU) invites everyone to “Conversations on the Day of the Diaspora” a virtual event organized by the Basque Studies Program at BSU.  Participating are 18 representatives of Basque entities in the Diaspora and 12 researchers.  The event begins at 8am (MST), noon in Argentina, 4pm in Euskal Herria, on Zoom ID: 982 4599 9796. No access code is required.
-In Reno, The William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies and its Advisory Board will celebrate the relocation of the Basque Shepherd Statue, commissioned by Rose and John Ascuaga for the Nugget Casino-Resort in Sparks and donated to the University of Nevada, Reno. The outdoor program begins at 4pm followed by a reception in front of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center.  More information, here.

-The Basque Club of Utah invites you to its Diaspora Day celebration beginning at 6:30pm at the Bohemian Brewery.

Euskadi

-The Etxepare Basque Institute, Elkano Foundation, and the Organization of IberoAmerican States (OEI) and the Delegation of Euskadi in Argentina-Mercosur invite everyone to the “Elkano Experience,” that will consist of a virtual tour of “the first trip around the world,” and 10 questions to return to the 16th century, that will be available to visit beginning today from this link; and to a virtual dialogue “500 Years: The Construction of the Planetary Conscience,” on September 16th. Peru

-The Euskal Etxea in Lima is organizing a virtual program for its members with the following activities: a message about the Day of the Basque Diaspora, a master class in Euskera, a presentation of Basque dances, a video on the Diaspora and a cooking class and meal..

Festivities taking place after September 8th:

-Euzko Etxea in La Plata and the Matxin Burdin Library invite to a virtual meeting about the film 4 latas, with Carlos Gabilondo. The event will be on Thursday, September 9th at 5pm.  Information to participate, here. Afterwards on September 18th at noon they will plant a sapling of the Tree of Gernika in the club’s yard; the event will include speeches and song.  There will be lunch at 1pm for the Day of the Diaspora.  In the second half of the month, they will publish number 15 of the magazine Eguzkia.
-Euskaltzaleak in Buenos Aires invites to see Tasio, by Montxo Armendariz, followed by a discussion led by Carlos Gabilondo and the Basque Traveling Film Program. This will be on Zoom on Friday the 10th at 7pm, including the particiapton of Patxi Bisquert from Euskal Herria.
-Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea in Uruguay invites everyone this Friday September 10th at 8pm at the clubhouse.  Writer and research of Basque topics, Alberto Irigoyen Artetxe will give a talk entitled, "Gernika in Uruguay – Origen and Survival of an Ancestral Symbol.” They will also present the “Baskos33” 2021 team and there will be a tribute to the Euskal Selekzioa. Music and food provided by the Basque Tavern.
-The Euskal Etxea in Brussels will celebrate with the presentation of a novel by Itxaso Muro ‘El agua te lo dirá’. There will also be singing and dinner.  The event is on September 11th at 7pm, at the Casa Miguel; Place des Gueux, 2, 1000 Bruxelles.
-The Lagunt eta Maita Association in Pau will also celebrate on Saturday, September 11th beginning at 11am at the Pelota Complex (458 boulevard du Cami Salié). Health pass is required to attend.
-The Lagun Onak Basque Club in Pergamino will celebrate on its social media and with a new food sale on September 11th.  More information, here.
-The New England Basque Club will celebrate the Day of the Basque Diaspora and Marinel Eguna on September 11th at theDolphin´s Cove Restaurant. Beginning at 1pm until 6pm.  Information, here.
-Euzko Etxea in Viña del Mar-Valparaíso will hold a Zoom event on September 12th at 4pm.  More information, here.
-The Denak Bat Basque Club in Cañuelas invites you to a virtual talk by César Arrondo. The club will publish its annual bulletin and will give a talk about the live and work of Dr. Roberto Herrera Lizarralde, of Basque descent, and well known in the city.  The event is on September 17th  at 7pm.  Complete program, here.
-In London, the festivities will be on Saturday, September 18th, beginning at 1:30pm at the Sagardi Jatetxea restaurant. Reservations will be taken up until 3 days before the event by emailing eventslondonbasque@gmail.com. More information, here.
-Itxaropen Basque Club in Saladillo will hold a food sale on September 19th  at noon, the menu includes rice with shell fish.  Information, here.
