The Corpus Christi Basque Club presents the program for its Basque-Argentine-MbyaGuarani Cultural Festival

The celebration of the sixth edition of the Cultural Festival will take place on July 22nd and 23rd.  Over the two days, the Eusko Etxea and the city of Corpus Christi, in the north of the Argentine Misiones province, will be the site of diverse events like film screenings, talks and artistic performances.  The awards ceremony for the Literary Contest “Amazing Stories,” will also take place that this year including works in Spanish, Euskera and Mbya-Guarani.  The club invites everyone this Sunday to its fundrasining Bingo.

Corpus Christi, Argentina.   The Eusko Etxea in Corpus is small but very active, organizing events on a small budget, not just for the Basque community but also for the community at large.  Without a doubt, much is owed the effrt of members and friends of the club that continue to collaborate so that the club can continue with its activities.  The Eusko Etxea announces that there will be a Bingo this Sunday at 5pm at the clubhouse, “to raise money in order to continue with our cultural proposals,” club resources said.  “It is open to anyone who would like to come and have fun and help us out at the same time.”

The club in Corpus was founded eleven years ago and during this time it has worked hard promoting the Basque culture among its members and people in the area, and putting together efforts in favor of local residents, specially the Mbya-Guaraní people, their living standars and culture.  This year, it oeganized workshops on both Basque and Argentine culture, with the special participation of Mariángeles Rosciani, president of the Euskal Jatorri Basque Club in Posadas. Her workshop includes dance, games, aesthetics and basic knowledge of Euskera, and takes place on Saturdays at 3pm in the club’s library’s reading room “Atahualpa Yupanqui.”

Olga Leiciaga, the club’s president explained “the workshops are free for children thanks to the solidarity of members and friends who have all sponsored a child.  In order to do so, they have committed to pay $100 a month, to transport Mariángeles the 80km from her home in Posadas as well as any other expenses.”  As part of this series there is also a workshop running on Basque-Argentine culture, thanks to Olga Leiciaga and Ana Maria Macchi, with other activities. “For instance, yhis coming Saturday there will be Basque songs, in Euskera and in Spanish; Tamborrada and the Jota Criolla, among the Argentine dances,” Leiciaga detailed.

Other workshops provided by the club include one on theater and another on stone carving that is also sponsored.

Festival Program

The annual cultural festival organized by the clubin July-August will take place this year on July 22nd and 23rd and includes something new in regards to the Literary Contest “Amazing Stories,” whose awards ceremony will also take place during the festivities.  Together with Spanish, this year Basque and Mbya-Guarani were included in the contest creating a true fusion of the three cultures.

Saturday, July 22

  • 10:30hs, Awards Ceremony for “Amazing Stories,” Literary Contest.  Special prizes for winners who are present.  Touristic walk through Corpus Christi and surrounding area;
  • Noon: Return to clubhouse for a picnic lunch;
  • 16:30hs, Basque film presented by Carlos Gabilondo. Title chosen for the first screening is Gernika, by Koldo Serra. Afterwards there will be a talk by Prof. César Arrondo, as part of FEVA’s agenda: “Historic References about Gernika.”

Sunday, July 23

  • 12:30hs, Lunch and show in the Corpus Christi Municipal Hall. Participation of the Alkartasuna Gastronomic Group from the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea in BuenosAires.  During dessert, performances by workshop participants with songs, dances, games and skits…Raffle for surprise prizes;
  • 19hs, Second Basque Film, Negotiator by Borja Cobeaga, again presented by Carlos Gabilondo;
  • 21hs, Farewell dinner with members of the Board of directors and friends of the club.
