Story contest prizes presented by Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea of Buenos Aires

“Le sucedió a un vasco” (It Happened to a Basque) is the title and theme of the international story contest that the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea Basque club in Buenos Aires began in 2012 through its culture subcommittee. The proposal grew from the first edition to the second, a call that gathered more than 60 works. Thanks to its success, the organization has shown its desire to promote a third edition according to sources on December 28th at the 2013 awards ceremony.

Buenos Aires, Argentina. The story contest “It Happened to a Basque” organized by the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea, French Basque Center of Buenos Aires was held for a second year with great success and international renown.  The jury comprised of Rosa Misciagna, Julio Barbaro, Héctor Sanjuas, César Arrondo and Emilio de Cándido had the arduous task of choosing the winning texts, not only because of the general quality of the works entered, but also for the quantity, more than 60 entries.

The jury made its decision in time for the awards ceremony, on Dec 28th, 2013 at the clubhouse on Moreno Street.  During the ceremony, the winners who were in attendance received distinctions and participated in a reading of some of the winning works. Among those, and by the club president’s special request, there was a narration whose central theme was Basque pilota.

Winners were in two categories: Five Winners in the General Category were:

-1sr prize, Miguel Mario Corvalan Singh, from Tucumán
-2nd prize, Olga Leiciaga, from Corpus Christi, Misiones
-3rd prize, Enrique Martínez, from Olivos, Buenos Aires
-4th prize, Celia Scicolone, from the Buenos Aires City
-5th prize, Francisco Conejo Hidalgo, from Sestao, Bizkaia

In the Members’ Category the greatest distinction went to Enrique Levantini from Buenos Aires.  In addition to the awards, there were also other recognitions such as special mentions, diplomas and certificates presented.

The event concluded with members of the Subcommittee of Culture making a toast stressing the success of the event and its impact having received works not only from Argentina but also from other South American and European countries.

“This was the second edition of 'It Happened to a Basque' and it has concluded with great success.  In fact, the number of participants this year greatly surpassed that of last year.  That is why we fully intend to do it again in 2014, with as much or even more success than this year,” according to event organizers.
