Reno, Nevada, USA. During this time of pandemic this event labeled “Basque” traditionally held on a Saturday in August has been postponed until 2021 ((See communication). The “Basque Fry” festival/fundraiser usually takes place at the Corley Ranch near Gardnerville, Nevada that gathers Republicans along with prominent names from the party invited by the Morning in Nevada PAC presided by Adam Laxalt, who served as Nevada’s Attorney General from 2015-2019.

Adam Paul Laxalt was born in Reno, NV in 1978 and is the grandson of former Nevada Governor, Paul Laxalt, son of his daughter Michelle who raised the Republican lawyer as a single mother.  His father’s name was unknown until 2013 when Pete Domenici, Republican Senator in New Mexico announced and officially recognized his paternity.

Raised in Washington DC, Adam Laxalt would return to Nevada in 2011, where in January of 2014 he presented his candidacy for the state’s Attorney General.  He won those elections and served a four-year term not running for reelection, choosing instead to run for Governor.  He won the Republican nomination although despite the intense campaign, he lost to current Governor Steve Sisolak who recuperated the office for the Democrats after twenty years of Republican governors.

Adam Laxalt descended into the political arena under the shadow of the last name Laxalt, very sonorous in Nevada, although it is not at all clear that his grandfather, who died in the summer of 2018, in the middle of his grandson's campaign for the Nevada government, supported his positions. ultra-conservative policies. Determined to assert his family heritage, Adam Laxalt recovered the event or tradition promoted for years by his grandfather in Nevada, land of ranches, when he returned in 2015 to this event, the "Basque Fry" gathering and inviting different conservative leaders from all over the country to speak. He was able to secure the participation of numerous significant names from the Republican Party’s right wing.

Adam’s grandfather Paul Laxalt (1922-2018) is considered as the Basque-American who rose to the highest level of US politics.  Son of Basque emigrants (father from Xiberoa, mother from Behe Nafarroa), he was a Nevada prosecutor, liutenant-governor, and governor of the state, and at the national level served as a senator for Nevada as well as President of the Republican Party.  He was an intimate friend of Ronal Reagan’s and during Reagan’s presidency, Laxalt played an important role on different topics and occasions.  Laxalt seriously considered running for president and enjoyed support for that despite his decision to not run in the end.

The now cabcelled 6th edition of the Basque Fry included Ted Cruz, Republican and former presidential candidate from Texas to speak as well as Matt Gaetz and Devin Nunez, along with Mercedes and Matt Schlapp.  Mercedes Schlapp was director of Communication Strategies at the White House under Trump and is now part of his reelection campaign. The 2020 Basque Fry was initially scheduled for August 7-8 at the Corley Ranch in Gardnerville, Nevada. In the cancellation statement, Laxalt has harshly criticized Governor Sisolak's policy regarding the Coronavirus. Ticket purchases will be returned to the more than 2,000 people who have already purchased them; however, they have requested that these be donated "to support our mission".
