Donostia-San Sebastian. Researcher from Lapurdi, Eneko Bidegain (Baiona, 1975), was selected this year as the Jon Bilbao Chair, a post that was created in 2014 at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). His research project, entitled “From Letters and Magazines on Paper to the Digital Era: Information that Members of the Diaspora from the Northern Basque Country Seek and Follow, and their Vision of Euskal Herria from the United States.”
This research will analyze how Basques originally from Euskal Herria residing in the Diaspora get information about the Basque Country, paying special attention to Basques who emigrated from the Northern Basque Country, analyzing what media and channels are used and what their evolution has been over time, from letters and social media to video calls currently.
Eneko Bidegain is a Dr. of Basque Studies and University Professor in the Basque Country, journalist, writer, novelist, researcher and social media analyst. He has family links to the American Diaspora for four generations back as he is the grandson of the great Bertsolari Xalbador from Urepele, Behe Nafarroa.
The Jon Bilbao Chair aims to promote research and knowledge of the Diaspora and Basque culture internationally. It is distinguished from the other eight chairs supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute at various universities in the world because it concentrates on research and not on teaching classes, and is the only chair that includes a research stay and a scholarship known as the Jon Bilbao Visiting Research Fellow, for a visiting professor to UNR.
