International Euskera Day, the Basque language will be heard all over the world thanks to Basque clubs and universities

Donostia-San Sebastián. December 3rd is ENE, or the International Day of Euskera.  With the second edition of Euskaraldia beginning on November 20th lectureships at 20 universities in Europe, Asia and America, all part of the framework of agreements with the Etxepare Basque Institute, as well as a number of Basque clubs that are part of the Euskara Munduan program, have been given “free reign” with the possibilities new technologies provide users, especially in this time of social distancing

In the Diaspora the bulk of the activities in support of the Basque language are taking place this week, especially on December 3rd, the feast of Saint Frances Xavier, International Day of Euskera, Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna (ENE), also coinciding with the celebration of the Day of Navarre.

Here we have provided some of the activities planned through the weekend.  As always, if your club’s or university's activity is not included here, please let us know so that we can add it to the agenda.

Today, Wednesday, December 2nd

-Eusketxeko Arigune, at the Eusko Kultur Etxea in Buenos Aires: a place to interact and celebrate Euskera with teacher, Gabriel Arce, who will attend online from Montevideo, Uruguay. The event begins at 7pm on Zoom. Anyone wishing to participate should email eusketxe@gmail.com up to 5pm to receive the meeting link
-Eusko Brasildar Etxea in Sao Paulo is participating in Euskaraldia 2020 as well as celebrating ENE with a series of videoconferences. Basque students speak to Basque speakers in Euskadi beginning at 8pm. This activity will be repeated at the same time on December 4th.

Thursday, December 3rd

-In Barcelona, Basque students at the Basque club will join in the virtual Mintzobira organized by the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.  There are three times to choose from: 12:00pm, 5:00pm, or 7:30pm (local time).  To enroll fill out the form found here
-Euskarazko Arigunea, at the Eusko Kultur Etxea in Buenos Aires. A place to interact and celebrate ENE.   The event begins at 7pm on Zoom. Anyone wishing to participate should email eusketxe@gmail.com up to 5pm to receive the meeting link
-The Laurak Bat Basque Club in Buenos Aires invites everyone to celebrate ENE on Zoom. The event begins at 7pm with a video done by the students and games.
-The London Basque Society Euskal Elkartea will pay tribute to everyone who has become a Basque speaker as well as other Basque students who will talk about their experiences and tell anecdotes.  At 7pm (local time) on Zoom. Request meeting information by emailing eventslondonbasque@gmail.com including your name and nationality.
-In the United States, at the University of Chicago, students at the Basque Language and Culture lectureships will learn how to “act like a Basque,” thanks to actor Koldo Olabarri. The event is on Zoom and begins at noon. More information, here.
-The Mexico City Basque Club will show the documentary “Euskara Munduan” by Iñigo Asensio (2014) to celebrate the International Day of Euskera. The film begins at 7:30pm (local time) at the clubhouse (Aristoteles 239, Polanco). More information, here.
-The Denak Bat Basque Club in Mendoza will hold a hybrid celebration with some videos uploaded on its social media beginning today, and a presential recital. More information, here.
-From Montevideo, FIVU invites everyone to celebrate Euskera Day with a Zoom meeting at 8pm.  There will be games, songs, and students can show off what they have learned during the year.  To participate, request the meeting link on the Federation’s Facebook, FIVU Federation of Basque Entities in Uruguay
-In Santiago, Chile and organized by the Basque Language and Culture lecturer at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and event about Bertsolarism thanks to journalist and lecturer Maider del Olmo and Lander Arizmendi, bertsolari and teacher at a  bertso school. The event begins at 2pm on Zoom.  Confirm your participation by completing this form.
-Students and teachers at the Euzko Etxea in Villa María, Argentina will enjoy dinner at the club’s restaurant.

Friday, December 4th

-The Euskaltegi Euskaltzaleak in Buenos Aires will conclude this year’s activities on December 4th by celebrating Euskera Day and its participation in Euskaraldia.  The event begins at 7pm on Zoom.
-As every year, to close the school year, the Gure Etxea Basque Club in Tandil will present certificates to its students.

Saturday, December 5th

-In Cordoba, Argentina, the Gerora Basque Association will hold a Mintza Gathering (conversation practice) virtually.  During the event, certificates will be presented to students who have completed the course.

Sunday, December 6th

-Students at the OihanKide Taldea in Buenos Aires will join the dantzaris after rehearsal to share a picnic for Euskera Day. The event will be at the Centennial Park at noon. There will be dancing and games outside.
