Mendiko Euskaldun Cluba was founded by Anita Izoco and Jeannette Blanco in 1981, with an original membership of ninety. The club’s original goal was to provide social gatherings for Basques in the area, since the hour drive north to Reno was too far for many to travel. This Saturday, February 7th, club members will gather at the Country Club at 11:00 to enjoy homemade tripota (a Basque delicacy), mus and good company. The luncheon is only open to paid members of the club. Membership dues are $20 for a single or $25 for a family annually.

Gardnerville, Nevada, USA. Besides the annual Tripota Luncheon the club also organizes monthly meetings that rotate between the three Basque restaurants in the area (the Country Club, JT, and Overland), and an annual Valentine’s Dance, mus tournament, and picnic.  Being a very active NABO club (North American Basque Organizations) Mendiko’s picnic was held in conjunction with NABO’s Kantari Eguna (singing day) almost since its inception.

The club’s mus tournament is also notorious for being the largest held by any club pertaining to NABO with upward of 80 teams competing every year.  This year’s tournament will take place on March 21st at the CVIC Hall in Minden.

The club’s membership is comprised of Basques from all over California and Nevada.  Newly elected officers include President Becky Sarratea-Murphy; Vice President Teresa Cox; Secretary Noel Arraiz-Sarratea, and Treasurer Jesus Rey.  The board also includes five directors Jean Pierre Izoco, Renee Presto, Cory Cox, Ignacio Sarratea and Severiano Lazcano.
