On May 25th, Argentina commemorated the 207th anniversary of the May Revolution.  As a way to pay tribute to Basques and their descendants who participated in the creation of a nation, Basque clubs accompanied the various ceremonies and parades that took place across the country.  As an example of what occurred everywhere in the country, with ikurriñas parading even in communities that don’t have a Basque club, we selected celebrations in Arrecifes, Chacabuco, Chivilcoy and Pergamino.

Buenos Aires, Argentina.   The participation of euskal etxeas in the patriotic festivities during the week of May is a custom consolidated in the spirit of Basque institutions in the construction of an identity that include a feeling of belonging, respect and commitment to Euskal Herria as well as to Argentina.  This participation manifests itself on these special dates, like last week, in the participation in various events and activities.

In the case of Euskaldunak Denak Bat in Arrecifes it manifested in various ways at local events.  On the 25th, invited by organizers the group Canto Libre y Reacreativo for older adults directed by Mariana Domine sang the National Anthem at the inauguration of the exhibit “The Voice of the Land,” at the local Cultural Center.  Also on the 25th, the club was present at the Te Deum and the parade that followed.  To conclude the festivities the Basque club Taberna provided typical dishes, along with other institutions.

Chacabuco and Chivilcoy

The Guillermo Larregui and Beti Aurrera Basque clubs in Chacabuco and Chivilcoy, respectively, also joined in, as every year, in local festivities.  In Chacabuco the parade included Basque representation that followed Alsina Street after the chocolate fest provided by the city.  In Chivilcoy, the Te Deum took place at the Church of San Juan and the event, at the Plaza 25 de mayo.  In both cities the Ikurriña and the Argentinean flag flew together.

In Pergamino, Food Patio

The city of Pergamino celebrated the anniversary of the May Revolution with a food patio organized by local communities.  Members of Lagun Onak were also involved after having received a visit from Aitor Alava and the Ekin Dantzari Taldea on May 20th they prepared their specialties to offer the community.  It was well worth it, as they sold every bit of it: pintxos, txistorra, and chicken.
