For years the Eusko Aterpea Basque club, in Gral. Rodríguez, Argentina, has provided its membership with a large number of activities related to the Basque culture and 2012 is no exception. It has already opened enrollment in its Basque, dance, mus and txalaparta classes. On March 24th, club officers and members will hold its general assembly and on the 25th, under the name “What I do,” will honor the “Vasco de la Carretilla” (The Wheelbarrow Basque) by walking to Lujan followed by refreshments at the Museum of Transportation in that city.

Gral. Rodriguez, Argentina.  The Eusko Aterpea club offers a great variety of Basque cultural expression.  Enrollment for various classes offered is now open:

- Basque dance on Saturdays from 10-12pm or from 14-15:30
- Basque: children’s classes on Saturdays from 14-15:30; youth and adult classes on Saturdays from 15:30-17:30.
- Argentinean folklore, taught by the directors of the local native customs group, on Wednesdays and Fridays from 20:00-22:00.

Mus and Txalaparta workshops will also continue during this new session and meetings for those interested take place on Saturdays starting at 17:30.  Regarding club activities, it is worth mentioning that on February 26th, an internal mus tournament was held.  “Even though we have hosted a must tournament during San Fermin, this is the first time that we had a mus workshop in the summertime, that was followed by a Txalaparta workshop, and a subsequent championship,” as explained by a club member.

“It was a really good experience with participants of all ages; for example, we had Candela who is 7 years old and Maria Elena who is 84.  Five teams participated in the tournament, and the winners were Angel Maison and Martin Duhau.”

General Assembly and Honoring Larregui

Club officers and members held the club’s General Assembly to start off the New Year.  The meeting will take place on March 24th at 18:00 and a treasurer’s report with review of the accounts will be presented for subsequent approval.

The next day, on March 25th, the Basques of the area will honor Guillermo Larregui “The Wheelbarrow Basque” on the 77th anniversary of his feat.  The activity “What I do” will consist of walking from Gral. Rodriguez to Lujan. Refreshments will be served at the Museum of Transportation to everyone who either walked there, or got there by other means.  Interested parties should sign up at: aliciaitcea@gmail.com or mpbalbi@hotmail.com.
