The Lagunt eta Maita Basque club in Pau, France held its 2012 General Assembly

Pau’s Basque club is living some sweet moments: last year it achieved its dream of having its own headquarters, and the members are actively participating in the various sections and course that the club offers. At the end of last month, the club celebrated its general assembly in which the 2011 activities were reviewed. In addition, president, Jean Pierre Urrutia, also presented some of this year’s projects as well as those to come such as the French Mus tournament that the club is hoping to organized for 2013 or 2014. It would be the first time that this championship is held outside of the Basque Country.

Pau, France.  Pau’s Basque club members are still enjoying the satisfaction of having fulfilled a long time dream: its own clubhouse, which opened at the end of last year.  It is here that the club’s general assembly took place on February 17th.  Attendance exceeded 100 members including representatives of various institutions that support the Basque club such as, Georges Labazée, president of the General Council of the Pyrenees Atlantiques and Pantxoa Etchegoin, director de Euskal Kultur Erakundea, the Basque cultural institute of Iparralde.

Lagunt eta Maita’s president, Jean Pierre Urrutia, was in charge of running the meeting, in which each committee chair gave a report on each of the activities represented: song, pilota, dance, and Euskera.  Mus was given prominent attention since the organization would like to host France’s Mus Championship in 2013, or 2014.  This would be the first time that this tournament takes place outside of the Basque Country, J. Michel Sallato is already working on this project.  The Basque club is currently participating in the classifications for this year’s tournament with results being announced on March 16th when folks will find out who is advancing to the semifinals.

Antoine d’Abbadie

Part of the club’s recent activities was a presentation on Antoine d’Abbadie, the well-known scientist, linguist, anthropologist and Basque patron, on February 25th.  The talk was given by Jean-Baptiste Hiriar-Urruty, professor at the University of Toulouse and member of the Academy of Sciences of this French city.
