We’ve learned about activities from Venezuela, one a celebration of the holidays and the other a sporting event. Eusko Etxea of Carabobo, the Basque club in Valencia, celebrated the International Day of Euskera on December 3rd with its traditional Christmas party, where the children sang traditional Christmas carols in Basque like Hator Hator. On the other hand Eusko etxea of Caracas is being the site for the XVIII National Games of Venezuela, from December 10th through the 15th where various types of pilota were played.

Valencia, Venezuela.  Eusko Etxea of Carabobo celebrated its traditional Christmas dinner on December 3rd, when the club celebrates Christmas as well as the end of the year.  Illargi Uzkanga, instrumental member of the Basque center, sent us a photo of the activities that took place at the euskal etxea in Naguanagua.

The party was attended by members and friends of the club that enjoyed a buffet dinner that included meat and fish. “Attendees had an enjoyable time among family, and enjoying Basque music.  It was the perfect time to show a photo exhibition of Basque farmhouses, one of the greatest expressions of Basque identity in Euskal Herria,” Uzkanga explained.

One of the highlights of the evening was the kids, after weeks of rehearsals, singing a number of Christmas carols including Hator hator, Haurtxoa seaskan, Gaueko izar and Gure potxolo.

Pilota in Caracas

During the last few days the Caracas Basque club has been the site of Basque pilota games as the host of this year’s XVIII National Games of Venezuela.  Games began on Saturday and include the following categories: frontenis, paleta goma, pala corta, paleta pelota de cuero, singles and doubles handball.  The tournament will conclude on Thursday.
