Hazparne, Lapurdi. The researcher from Hazparne, Beñat Çuburu-Ithorotz, analyzes the correspondence of Jean-Baptiste Lissarrague, also from Hazparne in Emigrer au Mexique a 15 ans - Correspondance de Jean-Baptiste Lissarrague (1902-1906)" (Emigrating to Mexico at 15 – the Correspondence from Jean-Baptiste Lissarrague (1902-1906)) (Elkar, 2020). Çuburu-Ithorotz transcribe, research and contextualize his letters and writing that included an interesting testimony about the characteristics of this type of migratory process that thousands of Basque experiences in the 19th and 20th centuries.
In all of this, the conservation work of the writings and the collaboration of Mayou Haristoy and family, played an essential role, who preserved and made the material available to Çuburu Ithorotz.
Jean-Baptiste Lissarague wrote a diary about the travesy on board the ship “Le Navarre” from the French port of Saint-Nazaire to Mexico, from where he continued to send letters to his family, reflecting and relating his reception in Mexico, local Basque-Mexican community and its way of life, local daily life and festivals in Mexico City and in Guanajuato. The outbreak of World War I would have a great influence on the emigrant community, and Lissarrague would return to Europe soon to lose his life in the war in 1914.
