Buenos Aires, Argentina. “Hamaika-klik” is the contest organized by the Basque TV station Hamaika Telebista in hopes of “Promoting the creation, production and consumption of audiovisual content in Basque, especially among young people active in social media.”  The participation surpassed geographical limits of Euskal Herria with first prize in the “Shorts,” category going to Argentinean Marcos Tedin who presented the video “Nire Aitzakia,” (My Excuse).

Marcos is a student at Euskaltzaleak in Buenos Aires, and began the process of becoming a Basque speaker two years ago. Encouraged by the contest, which learned about on Instagram, he didn’t hesitate for a minute and thought it would be a good opportunity for him to put his knowledge of the language into practice.

“One of my goals was that people from here get to know Basque and I think that with the video, I succeeded a bit.  I want to continue sharing Basque”

“I called my friends and I told them about the Project.  They worked on the most technical part and I focused on the script.  Realizing a good idea was the most difficult part because we were very limited by the quarantine.  Finally, I thought that this could precisely be the theme of the short, and so we managed to merge what was the initial idea, showing parts of Argentina, with the obstacles that had to be overcome due to the quarantine,” he told EuskalKultura.eus.

The teamwork was not only rewarded with the juicy first prize of one thousand Euros, but for its members, it was “a victory for the group,” at a time as difficult as the one that society is going through now, in the face of the pandemic and quarantine.

“Besides,” he continued, “seeing my Friends speaking Basque filled me with pride.  One of my goals was that the people here get to know Basque and I think with the video I succeeded a bit.  I want to continue sharing Basque and this has been a huge push.  I would like to work one day in the media in the Basque Country and this is a great start,” the young Argentinean said.
