Biarritz, Lapurdi. Directed by Carlos Portella Nunes, from Brazil residing in Anglet (Lapurdi), Gaucho Basko tells the story of Kepa Etchandy, renowned photographer from Baiona when he made a trip, “in the footsteps of the Basques in Argentina.”  As he himself explains to the Baskulture newsletter, “The itinerary arose from an old trunk in which lay a letter from a great-uncle dated 1927, and accompanied by a photo of his family with a multitude of children.”

“Until then, my father had searched Uruguay for traces of his family, who had emigrated to South America,” Etchandy explains; “But this letter came from Miramar, in Argentina, and I immediately wrote to their consulate.”  With the response from them, and new material in hand, Etchandy visited his relatives in 2003, and thus the idea of the report on Basques in Argentina arose.

Fifty two minutes long, the film blends landscapes and customs of the humid Pampa, with tours of iconic places for the Basque community, such as the Laurak Bat Basque Club. It includes interviews and references such as Mikel Ezkerro; and the visit, among others, to the city of General Las Heras, where the president of the local euskal etxea, Luis Alberto Echegaray, greeted Etchandy and his traveling companion, Carlos Portella.
