Activities of the Basque Language and Culture Chair at the University of Rosario will begin in April

As part of the agreement signed between the Zazpirak Bat Basque club and the College of Humanities and Arts in the city of Rosario, the program of activities of the Basque Language and Culture Chair will begin on April 4th. The series will open with a conference on Minority Languages with a course on Euskera that will begin on Tuesday on April 8th. Regarding other activities, the carnival atmosphere continues in the city and the “Zazpi” is getting ready for the big costume party next Saturday the 22nd.

Rosario, Argentina.  As reported by EuskalKultura.com, the Basque club and the National University in Rosario signed an agreement of collaboration in July 2013, to create a Basque Language and Culture Chair in hopes of creating a formal area for the dissemination of the Basque culture. 

Fruits of this agreement, the activities of the Chair, begin on April 4, 2014 with two events.  On Friday the 4th at 19:30, there will be a conference on Minority Languages with representatives of the Catalan, Galician and Basque languages.  The event will take place at the College of Humanities and Arts in Rosario, located at Entre Rios 758.  Following, everyone present is invited to the clubhouse to share dinner and performances by the Zazpirak Bat dantzaris along with dance groups from the Catalan and Irish communities.  

Beginning of the School Year

In regards of the school year that begins on April 8th at the facilities of the aforementioned college in room 60.  Basque classes will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 20-21:30 and will be taught by Professor Alejo Conti.  For more information or to contact the Chair, email: lenguayculturavasca@gmail.com.  The Chair will also be on Facebook (catedravasca) and on Twitter (@CatedraVascaUNR).

Carnival at the Zazpi

Regarding other activities, and loyal to Basque Country traditions, Zazpirak Bat will also celebrate carnival this year with a big party on March 22nd. The invitation to the party includes a stern warning, “Don’t bother coming if you are not in costume, or in the mood to have fun.”  This is a valid warning since during the evening the most creative Kuadrilla, incognito person and the best male and female costumes will be awarded.   

The evening will last till dawn with music and dance.  Admission is $80 for adults (including 2 empanadas and a choripan, beverage and dessert) and $25 for those under the age of 12 (pancho, beverage and dessert).  The price for dantzaris is $50.  RSVPs are appreciated by March 20th.  Contact the secretary at: zazpirosario@zazpirakbat.com.ar or by phone 0341 421-7670.
