Bilbao, Bizkaia.  Thanks to the About Basque Country Blog and A Basque in Boise blog we found out about a new app that is being added to the Basque themed applications for the newest cell phones.  It is Euskadiessencial by the Bizkaian company, De Paso Publicaciones.  The app is a touristic guide that, besides offering information about places to visit, restaurants and hotels, also includes advanced options such as augmented reality, trip planning, itineraries, travel diaries and experience sharing via social networks.

The Smartphone and I pad app is available in Spanish, English and French, and not yet in Basque, and can be downloaded from here.

For now the guide only provides information about Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa but company sources have told EuskalKultura.com that they are hoping to expand to the other provinces soon.

A Million Readers

De Paso Publicaciones has a lot of experience in the world of tourist guides.  The company began editing Euskadiessencial (in paper) in 1994, to be distributed, free of charge to rooms of several Basque hotels.  Today the guide is available in more than 7,500 hotel rooms of 3, 4, and 5 stars, estimated at more than one million readers throughout the year.
