Segura, Gipuzkoa. “Bizi gira…kutxa bira!” (We live…A box travels for us!) arose as part of the Iparra Hegoa Association that links cultural agents from Hegoalde and Iparralde in the Basque Country.  After a year without fact-to-face activities, and sheltering in place, with activities such as Korrika or the Ikastola festivities canceled or postponed, they propose this way of traveling crossing the border through this kutxa.  “This is an authentic Basque box (kutxa) which will be filled with dreams and longings in relation to Euskal Herria, cultural content, and manifestos, such as the text, Hitza da gure lurra (The word is our land), by Bertsolari, Ametz Arzallus, which will be read in each town it reaches.”

What is the Diaspora’s participation in this tour?  Pello Aranzabal Beitia, the Association’s spokesperson told EuskalKultura.eus that the box will arrive to Argentina at the beginning of next week and it will begin its tour at an event on March 20th at the Euskal Etxea in Viedma and Patagones.  It will return from Viedma-Patagones to continue its itinerary in the Basque Country in Baiona (Etxepare Lizeoa) and many other places to conclude on May 30th in Segura, Gipuzkoa.

“The participation of the Diaspora in this proposal is very important to us,” Aranzabal says.  “But it is very difficult for the box to get to many places.  This is why, and because of the relationship we have with the president of the Aberri Etxea Basque Club, Rocio Basterra, that we decided to begin the tour there and that this club would then represent the entire Diaspora”

“But we would like other Basque clubs to contribute.  And so, we invite them to record a short video in Basque and send it to us with a dance, song, poem or greeting, expressing a wish for the future of Euskal Herria, its people, language or culture.  We will add these to the kutxa.

Basque clubs should send their contributions between March 20 and April 8th to kutxabira@betxepare.eus or by WhatsApp to +33 685379899. Videos should be short and in Basque.

The box will head to Argentina this Sunday along with the group of teachers who are currently staying at Maizpide in Lazkao for a Barnetegi.
