EuskalKultura.com brings together its participation and tracking of the events taking place during the 5th World Congress of Basque Collectivities from its stand in situ along with reflections provided on Facebook, Twitter, and on this website. Following is a photo chronicle of the events including the first day where presentations took place by various Basque clubs, federations as well as Basque Government institutions such as HABE and the Etxepare Basque Institute outlining their current situations and future projects. The official inauguration took place on Wednesday afternoon with William Douglass delivering the keynote speech, and recognition of the oldest Basque centers in the Diaspora.

Lehendakari Patxi Lopez presided at the inauguration ceremony of the 5th World Congress of Basque Collectivities yesterday at the Kursaal in Donostia. The Congress will run through Friday in the Gipuzkoan capital. Representatives of Basque clubs and federations from 24 countries throughout Europe, America, Asia and Australia were convened this year under the motto “Guztion artean” (Together). Sessions began early in the morning, with the presentations of delegations from various countries. Today’s program will be the Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi (EHMG) seminar.

The latest edition of Zinevasco will begin on Monday November 7th, offering the Venezuelan capital a large selection of films made in the Basque Country. This is the fourth edition of the show that will present five feature films and fifty shorts. Sessions will take place until November 21st at the Cultural Center of Cachao and at the Art Center, Los Galpones, with a new special section at the University of Monteavila. All sessions are free of charge.

The Etxepare Basque Institute is preparing a series of activities for December coinciding with Guadalajara’s Book Fair and the International Day of Euskera. Just as last year, the Etxepare Institute will increase the Basque presence at this fair, the largest in Latin America. This year, writer Anjel Lertxundi has been invited and the presentation of his novel 'Dirty Laundry' (Etxeko Hautsa) will take place among many other activities. Next, the Basque delegation will participate in 'Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna' (ENE) at Mexico City’s Basque club, where they have prepared a new program as well.

The Association Euskal Echea from Comodoro Rivadavia has a significant Basque history in the south of Argentina. At 88 years old, the institution is one of the oldest in Patagonia and conducts activities at its headquarters aimed to preserve Basque customs. With its dances, choir, sports and gastronomy, the Euskal Echea represents the local Basque community, just as it did in September at the Festival of Collectivities. The Haize Dantzariak group was also invited to participate in october in the Gala of Collectivities in the city of Puerto Deseado in the province of Santa Cruz. Among other happenings, the Basque club directorate told us that construction of the new hall at the clubhouse has been completed.

The Etxepare Basque Institute has participated this month in the main language and book fairs that took place in Europe, publicizing Basque and the Basque culture. Last weekend it was in Berlin and before that at the Language Show in London, at Frankfurt’s book fair as well as at Liber in Madrid. Mari Jose Olaziregi, the Institute’s director of the Promotion of Euskara, made a positive assessment of its presence in all of them, stressing that Etxepare has tried to optimize what the stands have to offer. “We have reduced the size of our stands but have tried to grow our presence as well as the activities that we do,” she explained to EuskalKultura.com.

The 5th World Congress of Basque Collectivities will begin this Wednesday at the Kursaal in Donostia and will offer the general public the possibility to learn more about the Basque Diaspora through various book presentations about prominent individuals such as Simon Bolivar, or “Mr. Basque,” anthropologist William Douglass, the experiences of children exiled to England during the Spanish Civil War, or the Basque footprint in Antioquia, Colombia to name a few. Also during sessions dedicated to students, also open to the public, there will be screenings of documentaries like “Basques in the West,” or “Artzainak;” an open invitation to get to know the thousands of Basques that live in the “eighth” Basque province better.

Rosario’s Zazpirak Bat Basque club this Saturday will host the events surrounding the Centennial of Argentina’s Buru Batzar, the Argentinean branch of the EAJ-PNV (Basque Nationalist Party), that was founded in 1911. Juan Mari Atutxa will be there, among others, representing Euskadi’s Buru Batzar. Atutxa, current president of the Sabino Arana Foundation, maintains a close relationship with the Basque-Argentinean Diaspora and is the Argentinean Buru Batzar representative at the meetings of the Aberri Batzarra. “We, from the party, have a very meaningful relationship with Argentina,” Atutxa explained to EuskalKultura.com. “Right now, for example, we are discussing our direction for the next four years and Argentina is also participating in this process.”

Everything is ready in Donostia for the launch this Wednesday of the 5th World Congress of Basque Collectivities that will unite nearly 80 Basque club delegates from 22 different countries. Delegates will begin arriving on Saturday for this great gathering of Basques in the Diaspora that takes place every four years with sessions taking place on November 2-4. These three days are jam packed, not only with the congress meetings, but will also include the Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi seminar, a special session for scholars, as well as an exhibition of stands of various Basque entities in the Diaspora, among which will be EuskalKultura.com. At the end of 2009, the members of the Fundacion Juan de Garay began to work on gathering new data to compliment the previous editions and to create the fourth edition of “The Basques in Argentina: Families and Leadership.” The work of almost two years has come to an end, and as of December, it will be available at the Foundation’s headquarters as well as in bookstores. The work will also be complimented by a CD, and eventually with additional internet resources.
