Euskaltzaleak, since 1944 the euskaltegi or Basque academy in Buenos Aires, celebrates its 70 years and its anniversary dinner on Tuesday July 15th at the Centro Lalin in the Balvanera neighborhood. During the event there will be a video shown showing the euskaltegi’s career along with songs, music and dancing thanks to the various workshops there. While preparing the big event, the Basque Language School invites everyone on Friday to another film event and a San Fermin get-together.

He knows the US highways better than most Americans. In fact, his childhood friends in Durango, Basque Country say he’s become a Yankee, although he denies that. Manny Villanueva – Manuel Villanueva, as he was known when he left Euskadi, is a truck driver. He lives in Reno and covers nearly 500 miles a day in his truck that has 18 gears and 575 horses.

The Southern California Basque Club will celebrate its 68th annual picnic this Sunday, July the 6th, at the Chino fairgrounds. Last year they welcomed more than 400 people and “this year we expect, more or less, the same amount of attendees,” Mike Aguerre, person in charge of the picnic, told Euskalkultura.com.

It will be the longest tour that the Basque dance company has done in Argentina: more than two weeks, with an itinerary that begins in Buenos Aires and end in Santa Fe. In the capital, the group will present the show "Komunikazioa-Inkomunikazioa" (Communication-Lack of Communication) at the Regio Theater August 22-24th. Following, they will take “Gelajauziak” to Tucuman, Salta, Jujuy, Corrientes, Resistencia, Parana and Santa Fe. The tour will be of theaters, outside of the Basque club circuit, but Jon Maya, group choreographer has shown EuskalKultura.com his interest in collaborating with Basques in the towns that they will visit.

The ceremony took place in the city municipal park and was attended by a large audience who enjoyed the bonfire and joined in the dances and the kalejira. Regarding upcoming activities, the club has reported that there will be a San Fermin taberna on the second weekend in July and on the third there will be a film session complete with discussion.

Five of the six students who will study Basque for two weeks in the “barnetegi” (Basque language intensive academy) of Maizpide, in Lazkao (Gipuzkoa, Basque Country) arrived on Monday. The sixth one got there the very next day. Mary Araquistain, Helen Faulkner and Ysabel Bilbao traveled from Idaho, David Pérez made his way from California, Daniel Henriksen is of Norwegian origin, and Xabi lives in Illinois.

Genealogy expert Iñigo Rementeria has spent hours and hours in the genealogical archives in Euskal Herria, researching what have become his passion and his hobby: the pursuit of the manor houses and farmhouses where a number of Basque surnames originated. In the book Gure Abi Izenak he has gathered 10,000 surnames from Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa that can be accessed online for free on the genealogical association’s website Antiznako and now, here as well on EuskalKultura.com. The event begins today at 5pm and the goal is that members and friends can personally experience the advancements in the work done lately. In order to better appreciate the progress, film of the work done will be projected as well. Along with this invitation the Beti Aurrera Aberri Etxea in the Argentinean cities of Viedma and Carmen de Patagones has also announced their upcoming San Fermin and San Ignacio celebrations.

Since June 22nd, 65 children from the US Basque-American community have been in Elko, Nevada participating in another edition of Udaleku, summer kids’ camp organized by the North American Basque Organizations, NABO. These children will learn dance, Basque, txistu, mus, pander, makila and pala through July 4th as well as live and enjoy their Basque culture with their friends. So far, the entire experience is being a tremendous success, as seen in photos on the Udaleku 2014 Facebook page. We include some of those here.

Kids enrolled in Boiseko Ikastola (the Basque preschool in Boise, Idaho) for this summer will be able to learn sign language, as Mara Davis, director of the center, told Euskalkultura.com. “Summer programs are always a little different. They are educational too, but more fun for the kids,” Davis said.
