Jaialdi 2015 is over. Organizers were very satisfied with how it went, and concluded that it was a great success with a large increase in attendance. Among the participants themselves, there is also satisfaction, surprised by the contact with the Diaspora and with more desire to deepen it. For those who like number, there are numbers for all tastes, although the one that is repeated the most is 50,000 people, more or less depending on how you count. Here is the last photo chronicle of Jaialdi.

Jaialdi also includes a religious component every year linked to Basque Catholic traditions. In fact, Boise always holds its annual festival on San Inazio as it is called here in Basque, on or close to July 31 (St Ignatius day) with mass. The mass is traditionally held at St. John’s Cathedral in Boise, and includes a procession of the saint along with dances. Every five years, Jaialdi amplifies this tradition as it did this year.

Those who enjoyed Jaialdi 2015 in Boise, probably crossed paths with a trio of joteros singing in Spanish and Basque and…in English! Iñaki Reta (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1984) is the group’s trikitilari and is thrilled to have returned to the American West to play: “It still feels very special to feel like a participant in the Basque American community,” he told EuskalKultura.com.

The party erupted yesterday in Boise, with the arrival of the weekend and a large number of visitors that joined those who were already there. The local Basque community celebrated San Inazio in great fashion, along with music, Basque products for sails and much hustle and bustle a the “Basque-ing at Expo Idaho.” Photo gallery to follow.

The city of Boise and its Basque citizens have worked hard over the last decades to ensure a future for its rich Basque past. The phenomenon of Jaialdi is included in those efforts.

Boise was overflowing yesterday, waiting for the big Jaialdi 2015 weekend. Yesterday, the Basque Government held a reception for the local Basque community where volunteers who made this event, the largest or one of the largests in the Basque diaspora, possible, were honored. Another tribute, this time a spontaneous and very emotional one, was paid to Grace Mainvil by the NABO delegates who she has served for 28 years as the entity’s treasurer, when she announced that she would be leaving her post due to health reasons. Besarkada bero-bero bat, Grace! Here are today’s photos.

The Beti Alai dantzaris landed in the Basque Country on July 25, and since that moment it has been nothing but activity, joy and emotion. They barely had arrived when they danced for the audience at the Paella contest in Getxo, and their second performance today is in Zubieta. The rest of the tour includes performances in Gorliz, and Hendaia. In the meantime, the group is taking advantage of its stay to visit the main city and significant places in the Basque Country.

Activities and meetings continue in Boise as part of Jaialdi 2015. Yesterday, July 30, besides enjoying Basque culture and the festival, there was also time for politics at the “Together or Nothing at All,” conference organized by the Agirre Lehendakaria Center (ALC). This meeting on the right to decide aroused great interest, with the participation of Lehendakari Ibarretxe (ALC), Joshua Fisher (University of Columbia), and Jon Camio (Gure Esku Dago). Following a photo chronicle of the day.

Breckenridge, Colorado’s CM College hosted, last night, an open-to-the-public Basque cuisine class by Chef Ian Buchanan. Twelve students attended −the maximum number of participants allowed− and learnt how to prepare a menu based, mainly, on seafood. “I think the fact that Basque culture is unknown in this area sparked the interest of the people,” said the instructor, in conversation with EuskalKultura.com.
