The Centro Basque Restaurant in Chino, a habitual meeting place for the local Basque community

The Centro Basco is organizing a dinner/dance on Saturday to celebrate its 75th anniversary.  It also marks the 45th anniversary for the Berterretche family managing the place, an essential reference and meeting point for the Basque community in Southern California.  Zorionak to Monique Berterretche and her children, Bernadette and Joey who are its current managers.

The Gure Txokoa Basque club started the second half of the year “like a machine.”  On the one hand it participated in various community activities, promoting Basque dance and language.  On the other, it welcomed Basque visitors who visited the city” on their way through Argentina.  In the coming days, the dantzaris from Cordoba will perform at the Immigrants Day festivities on Friday September 18 and the Basque club will celebrate its traditional choir get-together in honor of Loyola.

Nancy Zubiri is a Californian journalist, as well as a successful teacher and writer.  We spoke to her in Boise, Idaho in the middle of the Basque Block at the end of July, the Wednesday of Jaialdi, the celebration whose growth and establishment she also remarked on.  Nancy is a fan of this get-together in Boise.

New book on Basque and Irish nationalism and Diaspora, by Maria Eugenia Cruset, published in Argentina

The work was published jointly by the Chair of Free Thought and Irish Culture at the National University of La Plata (UNLP) and Lauburu Publishing.  According to the author, Maria Eugenia Cruset from La Plata, “This book is an academic work – in a way, a continuation of my Master’s thesis in International Relations – but it is easy to read and can be interesting not only to researchers on these topics but also to the general public.”

The owners of restaurant 'Donostia' open a new Basque Restaurant in London: Lurra

Nemanja Borjanović and Melody Adam, owers of Lurra and Donostia.

They opened the Basque restaurant “Donostia” three years ago in the English capital and today they open their second Basque establishment.  Nemanja Borjanović and Melody Adam aren’t Basque but they are in love with Basque cooking and modes.  After “Donostia” that is more of a restaurant, Lurra is more like a grill for both meat and fish, a kind of sagardotegia or Basque ciderhouse.  And by the way, any unemployed Basque chefs or waiters should apply as some positions still need to be filled.

The first international experience for the Gure Etxea choir was a success professionally as well as personally.  In regards to the concerts, the choir, directed by Martin Tumbarino performed in front of massive crowds and enjoyed using cutting edge technology.  Personally, the choir members enjoyed the trip abroad and being able to strengthen ties with their colleagues in Brazil.

A Basque restaurant that will open in London on September, requires to fill different positions

The new London Basque grill and restaurant Lurra a few weeks before its opening in September 1st.

Lurra, a new Basque style restaurant/grill planned to open on September 1st in London provides various work opportunities (assistant manager, waiters, waitresses and runners) practically immediately.  Among other things, being legal to work in the UK is required, a command of English as well as the capacity to work as a team.  In return eligible individuals would receive a competitive salary as well as bonuses and the possibility of promotion.

The day has come!  EuskaKultura.com is taking its August vacation and over the next few days we will stop publishing news (although the agenda will continue).  We will return in September, but in the meantime, we leave you with a list of Basque festivities that will take place in Canada and the US over the coming months.  We also added the Basque Collectivities World Congress in Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Argentinean Basque Nationak Week, both in October. Ondo ibili!

Pedro J. Oiarzabal: “It would make sense to organize the Day of the Diaspora in the Basque Country”

Pedro J. Oiarzabal interviewing in Elko, Nevada Frank and Rosie Yraguen as a part of the Memoria Bizia project. Frank was born in Sacramento, CA; his father was from Natxitu and his mother from Ea, Bizkaia.

He returned just a couple of days ago from Jaialdi in Boise, where he presented the progress of the Memoria Bizia project at the NABO Convention. We talked with Basque researcher, Pedro J. Oiarzabal at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Kantaldia at Euskaltzaleak, with Maral from Arrecifes and Daltondarrak from Bizkaia on August 21 in Buenos Aires

Kantaldia will be held on August 21 at the Casal de Catalunya

Euskaltzaleak wil once again bring the group Maral, from Arrecifes, to Buenos Aires to share the stage with the Daltondarrak from Bizkaia.  The concert will provide the audience with a Basque repertoire where they will combine classic songs from Euskal Herria with covers by modern groups and artists.  Kantaldia will take place at the Casal de Catalunya and seats are numbered.
