El Centro Hiru Erreka celebró este viernes la tradicional fiesta vasca de San Fermín y el bicentenario de la Declaración de la Independencia argentina. Los Sanfermines (en euskera Sanferminak) son festejos en honor a San Fermín que se celebran todos los años, el 7 de julio, en Pamplona. Allí, las actividades comienzan con el lanzamiento del chupinazo/ txupinazo (cohete) desde el balcón del Ayuntamiento.

El diputado general de Bizkaia, Unai Rementeria, ha afirmado hoy que el viaje realizado a Washington por una delegación institucional, cultural y empresarial vasca y que ha costado 600.000 euros a la institución foral para financiar la presencia de Bizkaia en esta visita «ha abierto las puertas de Estados Unidos a nivel político, empresarial y cultural».

Herri euskaldunak ez dira horren euskaldunak. Erdalduntzen ari dira. Eta alderantziz gertatzen ari da erdaldunak diren herrietan; gero eta euskaldunagoak dira. Hori da Iñaki Iurrebaso soziologoak Bizkaiko, Gipuzkoako eta Arabako udalerrietako bilakaera soziolinguistikoa aztertu ondoren atera duen ondorioetako bat. Uemaren eskariz, herri euskaldunetako egoera aztertu du Iurrebasok Soziolinguistika Klusterrean. 1981etik 2011ra arteko datuak bildu ditu ikerketan, eta euskararen arnasguneak “arriskuan” daudela jasotzen da txostenean.

Mendiolako Ibarragoiti baserriko bere bigarren familiagaz elkartu da Ignacio Unzueta 80. urtebetetzea ospatzeko. Ondoko baserrian jaio zen Unzueta, 1936ko ekainaren 16an, eta hamasei urtegaz joan zen ama eta anaia nagusiagaz Argentinara bizitzera. Mendiolako baserritik, garai hartan 800.000 biztanleko Rosario hirira joan ziren bizimodu berri bati ekitera.

Bittor Garaigordobil, la vida de un obispo 100. Un documental recogerá la vida de Bittor Garaigordobil. El abadiñarra, hoy en Urkiola, fue obispo en Ecuador en 1964. El estreno será el 17 octubre, día de su 101 cumpleaños.

One of Israel’s attractions is its closeness to Europe. Cyprus is 30 minutes by air, Greece less than two hours, and every other country no more than a domestic flight within the US. In recent years, we’ve chosen places that tweak our cultural and historical interests. My own views of historic cities are set against Jerusalem, and in seeing how other places take advantage of their histories or physical characteristics, and cope with whatever social issues are prominent. Every city has a history. Few are in Jerusalem’s league, but many emphaize something to make them attractive. Fall River hasn’t much more than Lizzie Borden, but the ditty and opera make her story and house into something.

Anyone who’s competed in a three-legged race will feel at home at the2016 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. “It will look a lot like a field day,” says Mary Linn, one of the festival curators. That’s because one of this year’s themes is “Basque: Innovation by Culture,” and sports are a big part of Basque communities, Linn says. (The other theme is “Sounds of California“)
