Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is more difficult to work without being able to meet regularly during the quarantine, but the Basque-Argentine Juan de Garay Foundation is preparing the 5th edition of its Basques in Argentina: Families and Protagonists book.  The fourth edition was presented successfully at the International Book Fair in Buenos Aires in 2012, and the present volume is advancing, even if some contributions are still being received, and new stories and corrections are being made.

As Eduardo Goyenechea, and Jorge Beramendi, directors of the project told EuskalKultura.eus, the schedule includes having the entire text ready by November 30th to send for printing in December.  The 5th edition will be a digital edition, unlike the 4th in that it will be uploaded to the internet in a reduced version with complete texts, including development and gathering more than 24,000 Basque last names found in Argentina.

The Foundation explains that “despite the fact that there are 4.5 million Basque-Argentines, few know the origin of their last names.”  This book represents a valuable contribution “as it provides data on both generalized and restricted surnames, and the origin of each family.  It is also of enormous value for the Basque Country given that some of the surnames registered her are already extinct there.”

People interested in knowing about their last names or family branch that appears in the book can consult it here. If you would like to provide your family’s information email fundacionjuandegaray@gmail.com. Here is the relevant information that is required (if you know them):

1. The surname
2. First person in the family who came to Argentina: first and last name, place and year of birth, year of arrival in the country (if known, name of their parents, place, circumstances and reasons for the trip)
3. Regarding that first person, you should specify where he/she settled and what tasks they did, who they married or indicate the spouse's information if he/she came with a spouse.
4. The children of this marriage, place and year of birth, where they settled, what they did, if they had any public or economic action of any kind, their offspring and other members of the family
5. The information can be accompanied with one or more photos.
6. The information sent may be summarized for publication if it takes more than one page, information will be edited but again shared with the contributors to make sure all is satisfactory
