Working as an au pair is an enriching experience as they come. In addition to working and developing your skills with children, it is an excellent opportunity to meet the people, language and culture of a place. A Basque family in Vitoria-Gasteiz is looking for an English speaking au pair in the diaspora to care for their children, aged six to eight years. This may be your opportunity to learn and practice Basque in Euskal Herria!

Vitoria-Gasteiz. We have a job offer for our young and not-so-young readers: Working as an au pair to care for two children, aged six and eight, in a Basque family from Vitoria-Gasteiz, starting early June and lasting 6-12 months. The family will spend the summer in the coastal town of Lekeitio (Bizkaia) and in September, when the children go back to ikastola, return to their home during the year. So you can get to know both the coast and the interior of Euskal Herria. Summertime (June-September, to be agreed on) can be the trial period.

What are they looking for?

The family desires candidates from the U.S. (or English-speaking countries, so they can talk in English with the children) who are interested in practicing or learning Basque with the family.

You must be over 18 and have experience with children. Age is irrelevant; the family simply wants a dynamic and active au pair eager to learn in the Basque Country.

What does the job consist of?

The job consists of picking up the two kids--a six-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy--from Ikastola and taking care of them for an hour after school, and in the summer taking care of them during the day while the parents are at work, with weekends off.  This person would speak English with the kids, and the family in turn would help learn or practice Euskera or Spanish.

The au pair would have his/her own room and would be paid 70 Euros a week. This person would be treated as a member of the family and would spend summer vacation with them in Lekeitio.  In addition the family would also take trips to various places in the Basque Country to better acquaint the au pair to the country.

The family is looking for someone from June through October but this time period may be modified through mutual agreement.

This family has had au pairs before and they have reported that it has been a very positive experience for everyone involved. The only thing is, these former aupairs didn’t speak Basque or weren´t members of Basque communities abroad and so this time the family would prefer someone who is interested in either learning or practicing euskera so that they could help.
