Chicago, IL. Amaia Gabantxo, multi-disciplined artist from Bermeo and professor at the University of Chicago, writer, singer and translator of Basque literature, is spending her confinement in Chicago, where she lives. She has now launched the project #basquevideopoems, that consists of converting texts published some years ago in the book Six Basque Poets (Arc Publications, 2007), that she had translated into video-poems.
The book includes works by six contemporary Basque authors: Bernardo Atxaga, Miren Agur Meabe, Joseba Sarrionaindia, Kirmen Uribe, Rikardo Arregi and Felipe Juaristi. The project is comprised of Amaia working on a text that she chooses from each author, that for one reason or another, resonates during these times of confinement, turning them into video-poems that allows us to hear the voice of the author.
Of the series of six that she plans to do, so far she has published four video-poems: the first, “Adam and Life,” by Bernardo Atxaga, that portrays the first flu suffered by Adam and Eve when they left paradise. The second, "66 Lines from the City Under Siege,” by Rikardo Arregi, where poet imagines what life is like in a city under siege. The third is “The Cuckoo," by Kirmen Uribe, about man's desire to control and dominate nature and its ability to follow its own path, whatever that may be. The fourth and last one for the moment is "Questions" by Miren Agur Meabe, that reflects on the dreams the poet left behind, things she left undone.
