Elizondo, Navarre. This Sunday is Baztandarren Biltzarra, the big annual festival in the Valley of Baztan.  This year’s event will have a large official participation of a group from California that includes 42 dantzaris, 10 musicians, and another 100 friends and family, members of the Basque-Californian community coming from Basque clubs in San Francisco, Bakersfield, Rocklin, Fresno and Chino.

A delegation of young dantzaris from California participated 25 years ago for the first time, calling themselves “Euskaldunak Californian” (Basques in California).  It is certain that every year many Basques from the Diaspora participate in the event, although that year was the first that they participated as a group.  This weekend, 25 years later, some members of the original group will attend again, but this time accompanying their children.

Our colleagues at Dantzan.eus reminded us of some of the events this Sunday in Elizondo:

-Beginning at 10am, craft fair at the Pedro de Axular Park
-Beginning at 11am, each town in the valley will present its float in the parade
-Beginning at 2pm, Mutildantzak in the plaza and lunch in Market’s meadow

After lunch, Baztango ioiak or eztei-soinuak, message from Baztandarren Biltzarra, awards ceremony, entertainment, dancing in the Market Plaza...
