‘Spanish affair’ –originally, ‘8 apellidos vascos’− is a successful comedy that made really good in the Basque Country and Spain since it was launched, on March the 14th, and will also be the first movie to be shown at the Basque film series organized by Zazpiak Bat Basque Club of British Columbia, Canada. November 14 will be the first of three 'Basque movies nights' that, besides this comedy, also includes ‘Happy New Year, grandma!’ and ‘Obaba’. “It is a humble program but it’s a nice excuse to gather together and to see Basque movies with friends,” told Elena Sommer, president of the club, to EuskalKultura.com.
Vancouver, Canada. “I haven’t watched the movie but when I went to the Basque Country I was told that it was good and, when I saw it had English subtitles, I decided to bring it here,” said Elena Sommer.
The movie will start at 8 p.m. but, an hour earlier, attendees will enjoy a pintxo-pote or Basque pintxos night with Basque food and wine, cider, and txakoli. Sommer will be one of the coosk and is planning to prepare potato omelette, txorizo, cod-stuffed peppers, odolkia, salad, and ajoarriero. “Let’s see if we attract more people this way,” joked the president. The movie event will be at Mayview Circle. Othe Basque titles, like Urte berri on, amona! will be shown on January the 16th and, Obaba, on March the 6th.
Basque language classes
The first week of November will also be the kick off for this year's Euskara classes. Zuriñe Fermin, from Bilbao, is going to be the new teacher, after Jon Lorente went back to the Basque Country. Sommer is expecting around eight people at the language classes.
