The inaugural event for the Gure Arropa-Our Clothes exhibit that comes to the National Museum of Decorative Art thanks to the Buenos Aires Laurak Bat Basque club, will take place today at 19:00. The collection of traditional Basque clothes, prepared by Magdalena Mignaburu will be exhibited until April 27th. As part of the exhibit, the public will be able to enjoy a complimentary program of activities that include artistic presentations, a commemoration of the Bombing of Gernika and the Aberri Eguna celebration. Anyone wishing to participate in today’s ceremony should get in touch with the Basque club’s secretary.

Buenos Aires, Argentina.  The goal of the exhibit it to get the general public more acquainted with Basque art and culture outside of the confines of the Basque community.  The Laurak Bat Basque club in Buenos Aires invites everyone to the Gure Arropa – Our Clothes exhibit that will open to the public from March 14-April 27th.

The collection that was created and compiled by Magdalena Mignaburu includes thirty pieces that will be complemented with some designs from the Denak Bat Basque club in Mar del Plata and the Anaitasuna Basque club in Maipu.  Headdresses and shoes will also be among the items displayed.  

Regarding other activities that will take place while the exhibit is open, the club has announced the following:

  • Saturdays 15, 22 and 29 March: Basque music played on various traditional instruments
  • Saturday, April 12: Lagun Onak Choir performance with its repertoire of Basque choral music
  • Saturday, April 19: presentation of Magdalena Mignaburu at the Museum, researcher and creator of the Gure Arropa collection.
  • Saturday, April 26: activities to commemorate the 77th Anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika
  • Sundays starting at 15:30: oral narration of traditional Basque tales, by Basque writers, Argentine tales with presence of Basque themes or characters, run by Gabriela Mendia
  • Sunday, April 20: Aberri Eguna- Day of the Basque Country celebration
  • Sunday, April 27: Events to close the exhibit.

The inaugural ceremony will take place this afternoon at 7:00pm with words from Museum authorities.  The president of the Laurak Bat club, Arantxa Anitua, will also address the crowd along with Magdalena Mignaburu.  Dantzaris from the local club will also be present and will perform Aurresku and other dances, accompanied by a txistu. In order to attend, it is imperative that you first get in touch with the club secretary by phone 11 4383 3903 before 2pm to be included in the list of attendees.

Starting tomorrow, attendance is free.  The National Museum of Decorative Art in the City of Buenos Aires is located at Av. Libertador 1902, and is open from 14-19:00.  Admission is $15 except for retirees and those under the age of 12 who are free.  Remember that the Museum is closed on Mondays and on Tuesdays admission is free.
