Another version of the Festival of San Juan (St John) took place this weekend in Necochea. Dressed in colorful costumes and spreading joy with dancing and music, the local Basque club dancers once again gave life to the old celebration and burned a giant witch in front of the clubhouse. Once the flames began to fade, the dance continued in the Basque club with a special program. The participants of Hator Hona 2013 shared with those present the show that they will perform in several places in the Basque Country in July. These presentations were deemed of public interest by the local town.

Necochea, Argentina.A large group of people attended the event on Thursday, June 20th in front of the Euzko Etxea in Necochea. They participated in the San Juan festivities organized by the local Basque community.  The event was as attractive as ever, not only because the audience could enjoy the unusual spectacle of fire but also because the dancers wore their colorful costumes and showed off their choreography around the fire.

The ritual began at dusk on the corner of 58 and 65 streets.  Encouraged by the public, club members lit the effigy on fire, armed for the occasion by students of the Provincial School of the Arts #500, coordinated by Marina Rosso.  When the flames began to fade, the party moved inside. The dancers performed the pre-debut of the show that they will perform in July on their trip to the Basque Country.

Hator Hona 2013, declared of Public Interest

Unlike previous celebrations, this year’s Necochea Hator Hona program will not take place in Argentina.  This year’s program will take place in Euskal Herria and its participants consist of 20 youth form the Euzko Etxea.

The delegation from Necochea will leave on July 10th for a 20-day trip where they will perform dances and music in different localities in the Basque Country.  According to Marcial Agostini Zubillaga, one of the travelers, “the show is comprised of the following Basque dances -‘Aurresku’, ‘Makil dantza’, ‘Ezpatadantza’, ‘San Migel’, ‘Arkudantza’, ‘Suletino’, ‘Fandango’ and ‘Arin Arin’-, and an Argentinean dance, a Chacarera. There will also be a musical portion that includes songs from both countries.  We may not be able to present the entire performance at every event, it will depend on the time allowed in each town, nevertheless we will try and include something Argentinean,” he explained to EuskalKultura.com.

While the Necochea dancers are not lacking experience in Basque dances, it is certain that this will be the experience of a lifetime for the majority of them. They performed the Basque Country show during the San Juan festivities, and they were warmly applauded.

The club also told us, that the dance group’s performance that will be performed in the Basque Country, as part of the Hator Hona program, was declared of “Public Interest” by the Honorable Council of the city of Necochea along with the statement that they were appointed Cultural Ambassadors of Good Will of the city Necochea. Zorionak!... just a few more days!
