Vitoria-Gasteiz.   The Government’s Council approved the granting of aid to 105 cooperation projects for development presented by Basque NGO’s totaling 40 million Euros, 10 million more than those awarded in 2016.

These grants for cooperative projects is the main axis of action of the Basque Government in this matter, and to which the majority of funds are aimed managed by the Basque Agency for Development Cooperation.

These funds will provide support to these projects in three ways:

  1. Projects of cooperation for development that contributes to the fight against poverty in impoverished countries in the South.  Guatemala and Peru are the countries that include the most projects.  This mode includes most of the aid with approximately 32.9 million Euros destined to 70 projects.
  2. Projects of productive development training and technological assistance, directly linked to the fight against poverty in impoverished countries in the South.  Approximately 1 million Euros destined for three projects.

Projects of education to the development carried out in Euskadi to foment the understanding of the causes that generate the inequalities in the world and to stimulate the implication and commitment of citizens in the transformation of the current social models.  In this modality, 32 projects have been approved that include a budget of approximately 6.1 million Euros.

The recipients of these grants are Basque NGOs, or organizations with a delegation in Euskadi that will work with organizations and movements in countries in the South.  The grants for each project, whose duration is two years, will not surpass 600,000 Euros.  The majority of the approved projects are related to the field of universal rights and the empowerment of women.

Currently, the Basque Agency of Cooperation for Development finances nearly 300 projects around the world.  The majority of these, besides those in Euskadi, are located in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, in South America; Guatemala, Elk Salvador and Cuba in Central America; in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal and the Saharawi Arab Republic, in Africa and Palestine in Asia.
