The anticipated project will begin to materialize on December 3rd, the International Day of Euskera and the date the club was founded 25 years ago. Members of the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea will place the cornerstone of the Gernika space, a small public plaza that will be the site of the clubs’ cultural activities.  This won’t be the only activity to mark the 25th anniversary of the club, since they will also be hosting an International Meeting of Basque Clubs on December 8-10.

Salto, Uruguay.   The Basque club in Salto maintains a close relationship of cooperation with the local administration, the fruit of which have been some very ambitious projects in the community.  This is the case of the recuperation of the Harriague Bodega, where there the work is still in progress, although it already serves as the site of some of the club’s activities.  As the work progresses, the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea plans to make a public space called the “Gernika Space” where events and tributes will be able to be held.

The project is in route and the first step will be the placing of the cornerstone, a celebration that will take place on December 3rd.  This date was chosen because of its significance to club members, not only is it the International Day of Euskera but it also coincides with the anniversary of the club’s founding, this year marking a quarter century. This is also why the club has invited everyone for a meal and a show at the Parador Ayui after the official ceremony takes place.

International Meeting of Basque Clubs

Other special projects that they will hold is the meeting between Basque clubs and groups in the area, but surpassing national borders, in this region where Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil meet.  The goal is to invite everyone to the International Meeting that will also be part of the club’s 25th anniversary activities, but in this case on December 8-10.

Using the meeting as an excuse, the club has also organized a large program for the second weekend in December.  The proposal will include Korrika of the Pioneers along the waterfront in Salto; a dance and wine tasting in the former Harriague Bodega – Km. 0 in Tannat (grape and wine type); a photo exhibit on the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Gernika; and a tour through the main touristic attractions in the city. During the anniversary events there will also be tributes paid to the former boards of directors over the 25 years.  The invitation has also been extended to clubs in Argentina and Brazil.
